Initial World Baseball Classic Roster Announced

Major League Baseball announced the 60-man US World Baseball Classic roster yesterday with several players on the Mets and Yankees named as possible team members. The US list includes Johnny Damon, Derek Jeter, Al Leiter, and Alex Rodriguez. The Mets have Paul Lo Duca, Billy Wagner and David Wright on the US players listed. While the 60-person list is a list of players that can play in the tournament, the eventual roster must be trimmed to 30 players the day before tournament play. more ›

Bernie's Back

Bernie's Back

The Yankees may have found a new centerfielder, but that doesn’t mean they are saying goodbye to their old one. Bernie Williams has agreed to return to the Bronx for another year and $1.5 million. more ›

Will Bernie be Back?

Will Bernie be Back?

Baseball has a wacky transaction system. Yesterday the Yankees offered Bernie Williams arbitration, but only because they knew he would decline it. Why the apparent waste of time? Because without the offer, the Yankees would have lost negotiating rights to Bernie and if Bernie had accepted he would have been in line for a salary near ten million dollars for 2006. So, the Yankees and Bernie have until January 8th to make a deal. Even if they do, Bernie won’t be back as a starter and a certain, hairy, centerfielder may take his place. more ›

The 2005 Yankees

The 2005 Yankees

It was a season of lows and highs from an 11-19 start to 95 wins and a playoff spot the Yankees gave their fans a story with many twists and turns in 2005. There was the emergence of Robinson Cano and Chien-Ming Wang and the painful decline of Bernie Williams. In the end, the Yankees couldn’t keep the momentum they had built in September going and fell to the Angels in five games. more ›

Safe!

Safe!

The Yankees used timely hitting and solid pitching to beat the Angels 3-2 Sunday night knotting their series at two games apiece. The decisive Game Five will be played tonight at 8pm. more ›

Back to First

Back to First

Monday’s game was a microcosm of the Yankees’ season, not pretty but ultimately effective. It took them almost four hours, but in the end the Yankees outlasted the Rangers 11-10. As a result, the Yankees are back in first place for the first time since April. more ›

Staying Above .500, For Now

Staying Above .500, For Now

The Yankees finally ended their six-game losing streak with a 4-3 win in Minnesota on Saturday. Ruben Sierra's sacrifice fly in the 10th put the Yankees ahead, and they improved their record to 28-27. The win was a much-needed one for a team that has played so poorly of late. more ›

Yankees Streak at Six

Yankees Streak at Six

Tino Martinez did not homer in the game, snapping his streak at five straight games. It had been the longest streak by a Yankee since Don Mattingly tied the MLB record by homering in eight straight games in 1987. Jason Giambi was given a surprising start at DH and managed to a single in the ninth inning. Giambi, who refused a demotion to the minors earlier in the week, also struck out twice and is hitting .198. Joe Torre seems inclined to stick with him, even with Bernie Williams on the bench and Ruben Sierra on the way. more ›

Salvaging a Game

Salvaging a Game

Rookie, Andy Phillips, was the offensive star of the game, going 2-4 with a home run while driving in four runs. Phillips, who had spent time on the bench earlier this season, was recalled from Columbus Friday to replace Ruben Sierra who will be out four to six weeks. With Tino Martinez and Jason Giambi struggling, perhaps Phillips will get more playing time over the next month. He certainly earned another look based on his performance Sunday. more ›

The Taxman Cometh

The Taxman Cometh

The game wasn’t all good news for the Yankees. Both Ruben Sierra and Bernie Williams had to leave with injuries and while Williams’ injury appears to be minor, Sierra could be out for an indefinite period of time. The Yankees have already sent Tanyon Sturtze to the disabled list this week and will hope to avoid having to sending another player. more ›

Goodbye Twins, Hello Red Sox

Goodbye Twins, Hello Red Sox

In the 11th inning of Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins, the Yankees defeated the Twins and set up a series against the Red Sox. Credit Alex Rodriguez, and a wild pitch by Kyle Lohse, for the 6-5 Yankee victory. In the 11th, A-Rod had a double, a stolen base, and scored on the wild pitch. Talk about manufacturing runs. For the game, Rodriguez went 2-4 and is hitting .421 in the post-season. more ›

Yanks Bounce Back in Cleveland

Yanks Bounce Back in Cleveland

Last night, Mike Mussina took the hill against Cliff Lee. Lee started the season 10-1 but has been hit hard of late. Bernie Williams lead off with a double and quickly scored on a Derek Jeter single. In the second inning, the Yankees scored twice more on a Tony Clark home run. Mussina had a 30 cushion going into the second inning. That lead was reduced rather quickly with a Travis Hafner walk, a Casey Blake double and a Ronnie Belliard two RBI single. more ›

Yanks Look to End Three Game Losing Streak

Yanks Look to End Three Game Losing Streak

In Tuesday's game, Javier Vasquez took the mound against Brad Radke. Vasquez once again disappointed. He must be the most disappointing 13 game winner in the history of baseball. Gothamist can't remember ever watching him pitch a game and thinking to ourselves that he was unhittable. He racks up cheap wins and has an E.R.A of over 4 runs. When he was in Montreal, he once one of baseball's best kept secrets. Now in the Bronx, he can't seem to get it together. Now don't get us wrong, if there are two foxholes and Jeff Weaver is manning one and Vasquez the other, Gothamist is diving in with Vasquez. Vasquez, though has done little to impress Yankee fans. more ›

Yanks Take Two of Three from Seattle

Yanks Take Two of Three from Seattle

On Friday night the Yankees bats exploded for eleven runs. Bernie Williams continued his hot hitting, launching his 15th homerun of the year. Ruben Sierra hit a grand slam and Jorge Posada added a solo shot. The game was 10-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning. Jon Lieber was able to hold on to the ten run cushion and go eight innings for his ninth win of the year. Lieber allowed seven hits, 3 earned runs and zero walks while striking out 4 in the 11-3 win. more ›

Brown Brilliant, Yanks Win

Brown Brilliant, Yanks Win

Kevin Brown struck out seven and allowed only four hits over the 8 innings. Barry Zito got into trouble in the second inning and that lead to 3 runs. It wasn't entirely Zito's fault as Alex Rodriguez reached base on left fielder Eric Byrnes error. Jorge Posada flied out to center for the first out of the inning. Then Hideki Matsui singled to right, A-rod to second. Ruben Sierra then doubled to left field and A-rod scored moving Matsui to third. Newly acquired John Olerud then doubled to deep left scoring Matsui and Sierra. more ›

Afternoon Delight

Afternoon Delight

Ted Lilly pitched six and two-thirds of three hit, shutout baseball. Lilly struck out six and walked only two. Lilly was relieved by Terry Adams. Adams pitched his way out of the seventh inning. Vinny Chulk relieved Adams and Struck out three in an inning and two-thirds before giving up the home run to Ruben Sierra. Chulk took the loss to move his record to 0-2 with a 3.07 ERA. more ›

Devil Rays Outlast Yankees

Devil Rays Outlast Yankees

Alex Graman got the start due to injuries to Mike Mussina and Kevin Brown. Graman was unimpressive to say the least. He lasted only one-third of an inning. He allowed five hits and five earned runs. Tanyon Sturtze was called on to stop the bleeding, and he did for fur innings. Keeping the Yankees in the game. In the top of the fifth inning, the Yankees managed to tie the game at 5-5. Sturtze then faltered allowing the Devil Rays to take back the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. It was too much for the Yankees to overcome, losing 9-7. more ›

Yanks Split with Tigers, Pitching Still a Concern

Yanks Split with Tigers, Pitching Still a Concern

The Yankees entered the four game series in Detroit on Thursday with a spectacular performance by Jose Contreras and Mariano Rivera. The pitching problems were solved right? Not even close. Mike Mussina is now on the DL and will miss at least three starts. Kevin Brown is still not off the DL and Randy Johnson is still pitching in Arizona. Pitching was the reason the Yanks split (2-2) with the Tigers this weekend. more ›

Yanks Sweep Sox

Yanks Sweep Sox

The Yankees came into the series with a five and a half game lead over the Red Sox, by the first pitch on Thursday night, that lead was seven and a half games. It was a must win game for The Red Sox and their ace Pedro Martinez took the hill. Pedro picked up where he left off last year. After Gary Sheffield disrupted Pedro's focus by calling for time, Pedro plunked him with the baseball. After that, you could almost feel the air turn into the crisp October air this game deserved. more ›

Yankees Mount Two Comebacks to Win

Yankees Mount Two Comebacks to Win
