According to reports, a man was hit by an R train just after 2 p.m. this afternoon at the 4th/9th Street station in Brooklyn. FDNY told us that a male was on the tracks, power was taken off the line, and the victim was currently being transported to Lutheran Hospital in serious condition. There are varying eyewitness reports about what happened: some have tweeted that a man jumped in front of an R train, while another says the victim missed hitting the train: "Someone just jumped in front of a train at 9th st & 4th ave. MTA employee told me he fell in gutter between the tracks & was not hit." more ›

Video: Super Mario Bros. Theme Song On The R Train

As Leonard Cohen once kind of sang, "We are so small between the stars, so large against the sky/and lost among the subway crowds I try to sing the Super Mario Bros. Theme song." It might have just been a fantasy back in 1968, but Gypsy Joe Trane is making Cohen's dream come true: below, watch a video of Trane performing the theme to Super Mario Brothers on an uptown R-train recently. As the video uploader put it, "This was one of the most entertaining rides I've had on the R. I like subway performers and these guys had the best approach I've seen: just stand and jam for many stops." Let's just hope that the pro-Koopa Troopas lobby doesn't get wind of this. more ›

Man Doesn't Remember Pushing Woman Into Subway

Man Doesn't Remember Pushing Woman Into Subway

In an interview with the Post, José Rojas (a.k.a. "Osama bin Laden") claimed he had absolutely no clue why he pushed fashion merchandise creative director Ute Linhart into an oncoming R train on Wednesday night. In fact, he only learned of the details when the Post called him. "I don't remember; I just remember waking up in the hospital. I don't know how I got there," he said. "Oh my God, my life is over! Please understand what I'm trying to tell you. All I remember is waking up in the hospital handcuffed." more ›

Subway Cameras Useless in Catching City Hall Perv

Subway Cameras Useless in Catching City Hall Perv

Last week some creep exposed himself and grabbed a female rider in the City Hall R train station, which just so happens to be the same station frequented by noted lech Mike Bloomberg. (Just sayin'.) And like most other stations in the transit system, the City Hall station doesn't have security cameras. Or wait, actually it does have cameras, but the NYC Transit contractor who installed them did such a lousy job that they're useless! So yesterday Public Advocate Bill de Blasio trooped over to the station for a press conference to demand that state leaders fix over 2,000 broken security cameras and reverse layoffs for over 450 station agents. more ›

Annual Survey Finds R Trains Rank, L Trains Losing Luster

Annual Survey Finds R Trains Rank, L Trains Losing Luster

It's a good thing the MTA Bailout saved the W train from saying farewell because it sounds like its neighboring buddy line the R has already had enough dumped onto it lately. The tenth annual "subway shmutz" survey released today by the Straphangers Campaign rated the R the dirtiest line in the system with only 25 percent of its cars clean. more ›

Video: One-Man Dance Show on the R

A reader caught an impromptu one-man dance party on the R train Monday night. She tells us that "going from Manhattan to Brooklyn around 10pm...this guy jumped on the car with a boombox and wearing 80s workout gear. It was clearly some sort of stunt but he seemed to be operating on his own and kept bouncing into different subway cars at each stop." more ›
