"Good artists copy, great artists steal," quipped Pablo Picasso. Seemingly taking direction from the famous painter, two of the most prestigious art museums in New York have ironically similar exhibits featuring Picasso's works: The Whitney Museum of American Art has Picasso and American Art, while the Guggenheim Museum has Spanish Painting from El Greco to Picasso. Although the focus on place and the consortium of artists are different, both museums are strikingly similar in that they hang Picasso's works side-by-side with other artists' paintings to explore their similarities.

We heard of Takka Takka way before this guy in the back...okay, that may not be true. We've been fans for a little while now though (they're way better than this Roy Lichtenstein painting) and after checking out their live show we knew we had to book them for our next Movable Hype.
One evening last week, as Gothamist was making its usual evening subway transfer through the Times Square subway station when we came upon a huge group of fellow straphangers watching someone perform. And, unlike some of the performers who plant themselves right by the escalators (where the Roy Lichtenstein mural hangs), these performers were really rocking out - there was a young woman singing with a full band. And they had amps, which is also more unusual and seemed to work well in the station. People who looked like they'd be in a rush (business types) stopped to clap their hands along with hipsters, teenagers and the old. The music seemed to energize everyone.
The Mayor and the Public Art Fund have brought a little Roy Lichtenstein to city buildings, with Roy Lichtenstein at City Hall. Element #E, which has flourishes of brushstrokes, is the centerpiece, shown for the first time in it's full size, 50 foot glory; it's on display at the Tweed Courthouse, aka City Hall Academy. The other pieces are Brushstroke Group and Endless Drip (in City Hall Park) and a bronze bust, Woman: Sunlight, Moonlight in the lobby of City Hall. You can check out different Roy Lichtenstein sculptures on display in city buildings by calling 311 and making an appointment.
"Times Square. Crossroads of the world! Transfer here for everything!" bellowed by the 1 Train subway conductor.
Kids enjoy the roof garden at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They even try to capture Roy Lichtenstein's sculptures, and Gothamist thinks they do a pretty good job of it.
Go see Roy Lichtenstein at the Met's Roof Garden. The Daily News discusses the pieces on display, which were produced during the '90s.
