[UPDATE] Small Plane Lands on Highway In Hackensack

[UPDATE BELOW] A small plane with some sort of official seal on its side made an emergency landing on Route 80 in Hackensack near exit 66 this afternoon. NJ.com reports Port Authority police and New Jersey state police are currently hoisting the single engine plane onto a flatbed truck. Part of the eastbound side of Route 80 where the plane landed is shut down. Police sources tell the Associated Press the single-engine plane was headed for Teterboro Airport but was forced to land on the highway due to a mechanical problem. No injuries have been reported thus far, so expect some "Miracle on the Highway" headlines tomorrow. more ›

Turkey Vulture Vs. Car On Route 80

NJ State Police say that a turkey vulture flew into—and through— a minivan's windshield yesterday. The Star-Ledger reports that Jorge Hurtado had been driving eastbound on Route 80 in Parsippany when the bird appeared: "State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said the bird struck Hurtado's 32-year-old wife, Vanessa, in the face, causing minor cuts and sending glass in her eyes." What's more, the bird, which looks massive in the photos, was even alive in the middle seat for a little while (a police trooper later declared the bird dead). Vanessa Hurtado, who was treated at a hospital, also asked the towing company to remove the bird from the car "so that it would not sit in the hot vehicle all day." Turkey vultures are apparently attracted to highways because of the roadkill on them; in 2004, a motorcyclist was killed when he hit one. more ›
