Roosevelt Island Tram Returns Tomorrow!

Roosevelt Island May Wait Until Late November For Tram

Roosevelt Island May Wait Until Late November For Tram

A few weeks ago the Roosevelt Island Operating Cooperation began testing the new trams that were supposed to be up and running September. That date got pushed to "early November," and now RIOC VP of Operations Fernando Martinez says "our best estimate is the 3rd or 4th week of November." However, the community doesn't seem to be getting their hopes up; one Roosevelt Islander said, "I expect the tram to be back in Jan or Feb next year. Anything sooner would really surprise me." For now, we can just watch that scene in Spiderman and remember better times. [Via Roosevelt Islander] more ›

Roosevelt Island Tram Returns (For Testing)

Roosevelt Islander has been eagerly awaiting the return of the Roosevelt Island tram since, well, it seems like forever (but it's only been out of service since March for a tram modernization project), and now, with tram cars being tested for journeys over the East River, is sharing photographs of trams from nearly every conceivable angle. Men At Work... On Moving Tram?

Roosevelt Island Tram is Back

Just in time for the school year, the Roosevelt Island Tram is up and running again! It's been two and a half months since the tram stalled over for half a day with 68 people in two cars, and tram officials have said they have tested, re-tested, and tri-tested the cars, but still, more work would be done. WNBC reports Roosevelt Island Operation Cooperation president Herb Berman as saying "that in 2008, the entire system would be shut down for several months for a $15 million renovation that may include new cable cars." Maybe actual toilets, versus buckets with privacy curtains. more ›

Roosevelt Island Tram Is Moving, but Status TBD

Roosevelt Island Tram Is Moving, but Status TBD

Those poor residents of Roosevelt Island. The Roosevelt Island Tram, which was stuck for half a day with 68 people in two cars, has been out of service for almost a month while various agencies investigated the problems. For a while, the tram wouldn't move, but recently tram has been working on 400 test runs, thanks to a new electrical power source. But the tram still needs to be inspected by the Department of Labor (plus finish working on its backup power plans) before it can start running again with people in them. more ›
