Last night, the police found the boyfriend of the 20-year-old woman whose dead body was discovered wrapped in bedding in a Greenwich Village apartment. Police say Michael Cordero, 23, tried to slit his wrists on the roof of a building at West 62nd and Amsterdam; the Daily News reports that a family member tried to stop him, but Cordero "fled down the block, trailing blood, to a Western Beef supermarket on West End Ave." where he went to wash up. Police took him to Roosevelt Hospital and allegedly told the hospital staff, "I killed my girlfriend. I couldn't take it, so I tried to kill myself."

The police have charged a Harlem couple with their baby's murder. Teresa Flores and Rufino Bedoya-Flores were arrested after police interviews revealed they shook and hit baby Sebastian in an attempt to quiet him.
"Everyone has their stereotypes of being cold and heartless," Mr. McCarthy said. "I've only felt warm feelings from everyone."Well, that makes sense because New York is the world's most polite city! When McCarthy and his girlfriend return, he will take the NYPD up on their offer of an escort to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They were also planning on heading to other NYC tourist must-sees: The American Museum of Natural History, the Staten Island Ferry, and Gray's Papaya.
Gothamist was definitely heartened when we read that Lincoln Center is leasing and will reconceive the Harmony Atrium on Broadway and West 62nd Street. The Harmony Atrium has a sliver of an entrance where you can see a public rock climbing wall (run by ExtraVertical), some tables and chairs...and that's about it. The president of Lincoln Center, Reynold Levy, tells the NY Times, "We want to liberate the space, reduce the constraints and make it a real center, a beehive of activity. We would love people to say, 'Meet me at the atrium,' just as they say, 'Meet me at the fountain.'"

Residents and politicians are up in arms over what seems like the latest stupidity from Con Ed: A 9 year old boy got an electrical shock while crossing the street at 127th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard yesterday afternoon. Con Ed did not find any stray voltage at the metal plate (you know, the ones that are on the road because there are potholes or massive digs below), though the original complaint called into Con Ed said there was smoke coming from the plate. City Councilman John Liu told reporters on the scene, "Stray voltage is not something that stays constant. Stray voltage is unpredictable, it's erratic..it just pops up. This is testimony that we received two years ago," (probably during the Jodie Lane electrical shock death investigation). Liu is now convening a special meeting this morning at 10AM to discuss the issue with Con Ed and the Department of Transportation. The boy is recovering at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital and area residents are trying to avoid walking on metal plates.
Bar patrons are more and more crazy these days! A bouncer at the Hudson Hotel was punched, then stabbed by a woman he was throwing out of the bar. Shanti Booker, who the Post describes as a Staten Island mother, was complaining that she wasn't getting drinks fast enough, and when she and her boyfriend caused trouble, security guard Rasman Mushett asked her to leave. But she threw a punch, and then, as one witness described, she "drew out a knife and shanked him." Booker and her boyfriend, Daniel Valentine, fled the hotel, but were apprehended a few blocks away. Mushett is recovering at Roosevelt Hospital.
A reader emailed us Monday afternoon, noting that there were at least twenty police cars and tons of officers outside of St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, but the NYPD wasn't saying anything - did Gothamist know what was happening? Short of hacking into a police scanner, Gothamist came up empty... until we heard that a high-ranking police officer had accidentally shot himself in the stomach. The commanding officer for Transit Bureau 3, Captain William Roge, was changing his guns in his office at the 145th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue stop, removing his .38 for a 9mm, and somehow, the .38 went off. The NY Times reports that it was hard to hear the shots over the subways, but when other officers heard, it seemed like "dozens of police officers" were on the scene.
