L.I. Cops Use "Big Brother" Against Gun Violence

Long Island cops are using an $800,000 acoustic gunshot tracking system that allows officers to almost immediately pinpoint the locations of shootings from a data center miles away. The so-called ShotSpotter system transmits the sound of gunfire using microphones and wireless sensors to a police computer and triangulates the scene of a shooting to within 80 feet — though police sources in the “the gun corridor” between Roosevelt and Uniondale in Nassau County say it is often more accurate than that, sometimes leading cops exactly to the spots where shell casings were found.

NYPD Cop One of Four Men Cleared in Bias Assault

A grand jury has cleared an NYPD officer and three other men of assault charges in the case that saw the alleged black victim accusing the group of four Hispanics of being racially motivated in their attack. 52-year-old Darryl Jackson had said that the men called him the n-word and told him to "go back to Africa" in the Sunday morning altercation at a Roosevelt deli that he says involved them beating him with a bat. But a physician could not find evidence of a bat attack. The DA said, "Different people saw various portions of the incident and nearly all of them managed to see something completely different." Jackson told reporters, "What proof did they need? For me to be dead? I feel like I'm a victim twice." He plans to file federal charges claiming that his civil rights were violated. Officer Juan Nunez, who has has been on modified duty since being charged, will now return to the force full time. Fernando Mateo, president of Hispanics Across America, said of the decision, "We must stop invoking the word hate whenever a person of color is involved in an altercation."

NYPD Cop Accused of Bias Attack on Long Island

On the same day a former cop was charged with killing his girlfriend, another NYPD officer is one of four men who have been arrested for beating up a man on Long Island yesterday—charges that may be upped to a hate crime attack. 32-year-old Juan Nunez has been suspended by the NYPD after he and three other Hispanic men allegedly attacked 52-year-old Daryl Jackson outside of a deli at 8:15 a.m. Sunday morning. Jackson was initially called a racial epithet by one of Nunez's group while he was waiting to use a pay phone. When Jackson said that he didn't appreciate the slur, he claims one of the men said, "Go back to Africa." Jackson ended up in the hospital with head and neck wounds after the attack which allegedly involved a baseball bat. Nunez is a 7-year vet at the 101st precinct in Far Rockaway.
