Now Kids Can E-Mail Personalized McDonald's Ads!

One year ago today we wrote about protesters calling for the retirement of McDonald's mascot Ronald McDonald. And, for a while, he did seem to be less omnipresent. But that was then. The hamburger-pushing clown is back in a new set of McDonald's ads starting to air next week and now he wants to make some home movies for your kids. Naturally, some parents groups that were already concerned about obese American children are not amused. more ›

Protesters Call on Ronald McDonald to Retire!

During his very first television commercial in 1963, Ronald McDonald (portrayed by television announcer Willard Scott) told viewers, "Here I am kids. Hey, isn’t watching TV fun? Especially when you got delicious McDonald’s hamburgers. I know we’re going to be friends too cause I like to do everything boys and girls like to do. Especially when it comes to eating those delicious McDonald’s hamburgers." And then he laughed sinisterly while jabbing a comically huge insulin syringe into a fat boy's forearm! Kidding, he actually began a long, illustrious career in increasing brand awareness—a career that some critics want to bring to an end. more ›

Rooftop Ronald Wasn't Stolen; Endorses Obama

Rooftop Ronald Wasn't Stolen; Endorses Obama

The owners of the rooftop Ronald McDonald have stepped forward! We received the following email today from one of them (Ali), telling us:

That's my apartment featured in your Ronald McDonald story; it actually was not stolen; my roommate [Michael] saved it from McDonald's garbage one night and then lugged it up five flights of stairs. He's a hero if you ask me.
Ronald used to reside near a piano inside the McDonald's but was dumped in the trash by the powers that be behind the Golden Arches. He's got a new lease on life now, thanks to his upstairs guardian angels, and for about a month he's been sittin' pretty on the $6K patio furniture (fact). more ›

Ronald McDonald is Movin' on Up

Ronald McDonald is Movin' on Up

A McDonald's on the corner of 56th and 8th in Manhattan is missing a Ronald -- but an aerial view of the area shows him safe and sound lounging on a private rooftop. Williamsboard posters report, "someone who lives in the six-story building next door took advantage of a second floor window that lets them out onto the McDonald's roof...". more ›

Obesity Society President Quits, Fast Food Ties Criticized

The incoming president of the Obesity Society has resigned amidst controversy surrounding his work on behalf of the restaurant industry. Last month Dr. David B. Allison (pictured), a professor of biostatistics and nutrition at the University of Alabama, drew fire from colleagues when he submitted an affidavit questioning the city’s new rules requiring chain restaurants to prominently display calorie information on their menus. more ›

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Emerge!

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Emerge!

Starting in the afternoon, the masses traveled to the Upper West Side yesterday to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons get inflated on West 77th and West 81st Streets between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue. By 6PM, crowds were penned in for blocks - it took us about 30-40 minutes of shuffling and snaking around before we could get close to any balloons. We suspect the Broadway stagehands' strike as well as... more ›

Will the Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Fly?

Will the Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloons Fly?

With weather advisories in effect, warning of storms and winds, city officials are contemplating what to do with Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons. From the NY Times:

The poor weather and heightened oversight could ground some or all of the 13 big balloons — 1 fewer than last year — that are set to fly today, starting at 9 a.m. In the best case, they could be flown so low as to practically be floats. In the worst case, as Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg warned, the hapless helium-filled creatures could be pulled onto side streets and summarily deflated. more ›

Bidding On Law & Order And More...

Gothamist was taking a look at the various auctions ShopNBC has going to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Of course, our attention was squarely on the Law & Order: SVU Walk On role, where, if you have enough dough, you get to be a non-union background performer. And there's also a L&O: Criminal Intent Fan Package as well as a L&O: SVU Fan Package, including the infamous "Law & Orderopoly" board game Dick Wolf made as a holiday gift (or was it a wrap gift) Gothamist has heard about but never seen! All in all, a lot of these supposed "gifts" to bid on (besides the walk-ons or backstage tours) are crappy, just things anyone could together from the NBC Experience store. But we're all for it if they can raise money for a good charity. more ›

City Hall Welcome Imaginary Friends

City Hall Welcome Imaginary Friends

AdAge was at the event and reported (registration required, but it's free):

Many icons were no-shows, including Ronald McDonald and the Jolly Green Giant. A rumor quickly circulated that the Energizer Bunny did not make an appearance because the marketer felt that it would be "off-message" for the drum-thumping rabbit to be seen in public being "wanded" at City Hall's security checkpoint.
Still, it's like a Madison Avenue acid trip! more ›
