The endless debate over how to classify hipsters has been tearing this city apart for years, pitting brother against scenester, native New Yorker against arriviste, trust funder against squatter, even self-hating hipster against himself. So it's important for everyone to step back a bit and acknowledge that while we may never agree on a singular definition for hipster, like Supreme Court judges watching porn, we know it when we see it. Sure, the word hipster is a tired cliché, but the cliché still walks, talks, and parties down in Brooklyn, with bottles of whiskey stashed proudly down the back of its Speedo. Your hate only makes them stronger, and let's face it – they do know how to have fun.

Last night at City College, it was Gotham Girls Roller Derby fever. The two-time defending champions the Queens of Pain faced off against the Bronx Gridlock to decide who would reign supreme for the 2007 season and take home a pretty sweet trophy. Raymond Haddad was on the scene for the championship match and took some amazing pictures. He reports, "The Queens of Pain made a ferocious comeback [apparently 31 unanswered points', led by...

We can't possibly choose only one music event for the weekend, so check out OhMyRockness for the jam packed weekend listings. We will say, however, that one of the openers for Snowden at Maxwell's tonight...is We Are Scientists, trying out some new tunes. Though closer to home are The Clientele and Beach House at Bowery Ballroom. Listen: Apple Orchard.mp3 - Beach House

The pseudonymous Lux Nightmare burst onto the alt porn scene as a college student at Columbia where she launched the naked-guy-and-girl site That Strange Girl, featuring stills and video of herself and numerous other models who looked like they could be her fellow classmates. At a time when Suicide Girls and Burning Angel were coming to prominence, That Strange Girl (who, full disclosure, this interviewer posed for) was a homegrown, indie entry in the genre. Cut to the present, where Nightmare has since folded her XXX business and is a member of Gotham Girls Roller Derby, teaches sex ed to teenagers in East Harlem, and runs the smarty-pants sex site Sexerati, where she conducts interviews, explores Dating 2.0, and explains terms like "the pink ghetto." (Warning: many of the links in this interview are NSFW.) Currently, the "non porn star" is working on a book proposal about her time in the alt porn trenches.

We used to think it was pretty sweet that disabled people got themselves a handsome little discount when riding subways and buses. But we always felt that there was probably some downside that we didn't see. In fact, it turns out that only a little over 10% of the subway stations in NYC are actually even accessible to the disabled. And apparently even a $300 million renovation of the Stillwell Avenue Station in Brooklyn wasn't enough to ensure that elevators at the stop would be ready in time for actual traffic. We were pretty excited when the terminal reopened two years ago, with its solar panels and all. But its elevators, that were supposed to be up and running in May, weren't ready until last month and even then experienced frequent service outages. Sadly, since the stop was listed as an all-access type, many disabled people who rode out there found no way out of the station and had to turn around and go find another way out.

Last night at the Brooklyn Campus of Long Island University, the Brooklyn Bombshells handed the Queens of Pain their first defeat ever in the short history of the Gotham Girls Roller Derby. There were elbows thrown, hips checked, and girls going down left and right. Brooklyn came out on top in front of a sold out home crowd that saw a match that wasn't decided until late into the 2nd half. By the time the time ran out, the Bombers outscored the Pain, 73-64.

Our favorite Roller Derby Girls have lost their home. The Gotham Girls Roller Derby is in search of a new place to call home as the Skate Key in The Bronx is shutting down. As a result, the GGRD has launched "Operation Crash Pad", a " campaign to find a new practice location and game venue." Their season is scheduled to start on April 7th. As of now, there is no cut-off date to get a venue selected.

is the Fringe’s star pupil, starting at the festival, and then heading to Broadway. There are over two hundred shows playing the Fringe, at various venues around town. The website is great, but overwhelming in its riches. There are just so many shows to browse through, but Gothamist has been carefully reviewing it and will be offering a series of suggested Fringe show pix. Ticket info can be found for all of these here, not to mention the multitudes of other shows. Here’s a starting point:
