Those Strange Lights Were Just Boring Rockets

There was a lot of chatter about strange lights in the sky last night, from the Bowery to Queens, with one tipster saying, "My boyfriend and I were eating dinner on our roof across from the New Museum and saw a strong point of light that slowly emitted a wash of light that grew then receded until it totally faded away. It was definitely NOT a chopper plane or anything we've ever seen." This took place around 8 p.m., prime time for an alien invasion.

Roger Clemens Offers To Answer Questions On Houstonist

After going on Mike & Mike in the Morning to continue his denials of taking performance enhancing drugs, Roger Clemens decided to contact Houstonist (yes, part of the Gothamist family) and offered to take readers' questions: "The fans and the folks in Houston have always been great to Deb, the kids and me and we’re grateful for the support. I know a lot of baseball fans read the Houstonist and that they have asked questions about the false allegations against me. I welcome the chance to answer the questions of your readers." Yes, there are questions why Houstonist was picked as a follow-up to ESPN Radio, but Houstonist has confirmed the email's address with the Roger Clemens Foundation and until editor Jason Bargas gets to meet Clemens in person and see how he reacts to photos of Mike PIazza, we'll just assume it's legit. And Gothamist readers, you can pose your questions on the Houstonist post—your commenting usernames will work there, too.

Video: Astroland Rocket Takes Flight

Last month Coney Island ended a tumultuous year with news that the Astroland Rocket needed a home, and fast. Well, today it was carefully moved (video of the rocketship in flight after the jump), but no one seems to know what will happen next. A look at the Coney Island message board, and here's what we find out: the rocket weighs 14,000 lbs! Other than that, there's a hopeful comment amongst the photos and sentiments: "The fact that they took it down in one piece could be a good sign....Does anyone know if someone has taken it? Is it being sent off somewhere also in one piece?"

Portions of Francis Lewis High School were shut down yesterday after a teenager said he had a bomb. In reality, it turns out that it was more like a rocket. Nonetheless, the teen was charged with placing a false bomb. School security (they're useful for something, apparently) overheard students talking about a bomb, so they inspected 16-year-old Victor Vergara's bag where they spotted the suspicious device. When they asked Vergara what it was, he told them it was "a bomb." After the device was removed, the NYPD bomb squad was called in. Sources tell The Post that the rocket was made with less than a foot of PVC and cat littler and probably had the explosive power of a large firecracker. There were also reportedly wires with the rocket/bomb.
