Watch Kristen Wiig And The Foo Fighters Perform "I Love Rock n' Roll" In Rockefeller Plaza

Following her teary-eyed send-off from Saturday Night Live this weekend, Kristen Wiig got up on stage at the afterparty with the Foo Fighters to belt out "I Love Rock n' Roll," with a beer in hand and with Rockefeller Plaza's famous statue of Prometheus behind her. Also behind her were Jason Sudeikis and Andy Samberg, singing back-up. It's been rumored that the two will also be leaving the show, and were possibly upset that Lorne Michaels decided to single Wiig out in the finale farewell. more ›

Rockefeller Center Near-Jumper Was Distraught Tourist From Vegas

Yesterday, midtown was held captive when a man ascended to the top of Rockefeller Center and threatened to jump. Thankfully, after a tense hour, police were able to talk down 23-year-old tourist Jorge (George) Ruiz. "[He] was very apologetic. He stated over and over again that he was sorry for taking everyone's time, and we reassured him at that point that we were there to help him," said Detective Shawn Soler, one of the officers who was talking to him at the time. more ›

All Day Liz Lemon Alert!

30 Rock rarely films at 30 Rock—typically they're at Silvercup Studios in Queens—but we hear today they'll be at the Midtown location (possibly with Susan Sarandon) from 10 a.m. through 8 p.m. for an all-day shoot. Or an all-day Liz Lemon party, whichever way you want to think of it. more ›

Man Lunges At Today Show Hosts At Rockefeller Plaza

The hosts of a Today show had a brief scare when a man apparently lunged at them during a live segment on Rockefeller Plaza. According to the Post, "A deranged Brooklyn man lunged over a set of barricades and tried to approach them." No one was hurt, but "The program immediately went inside the studio where anchor Ann Curry began delivering the news as if nothing had happened." more ›

Flashback: Rockefeller Plaza

Flashback: Rockefeller Plaza
             + 1 more

Rockefeller Center (and the Plaza comprised of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres or prime real estate between 48th and 51st streets) was built in 1939, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987, and immortalized in LEGO form just last year. And here's a fun fact from NPR: "The sunken plaza was originally a failure, unable to retain the intended retail tenants, and it remained a problem until the skating rink, a great novelty made possible by new refrigeration technology, was added as a somewhat desperate experiment." more ›

Good Morning With Lady Gaga (For Some)

Bright n' early this morning, almost too early for such a spectacle, Lady Gaga's monster masses converged on Rockefeller Plaza for a free show as part of the Today show's concert series. If you missed it, or even if you were there and somehow survived the madness (at least two fans were taken away by EMS), here's a little audio/visual recap! more ›

Girls Camp Out For Justin Bieber's Today Show Gig

This is our youth, ladies and gentlemen—the swarms of shrieking young girls and their parents who were at Rockefeller Plaza to hear teen-and-tween dream Justin Bieber perform during the Today Show. One 14-year-old girl from Pennsylvania convinced her grandmother that she and a friend should camp out over night with the time-old tactic of flattery. Bailey Hosterman told the Daily News, "I told her how awesome it would be and that she would be the best grandma ever." more ›

Priest Allegedly Stalked, Harassed Conan O'Brien

The Manhattan District Attorney's office announced that the Reverend David Ajemian was arrested on charges of stalking and threatening Conan O'Brien. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston placed Ajemian, a 46-year-old priest in Stoneham, Massachusetts, on leave. The DA's office says that Ajemian had sent letters (some on parish letterhead!) to O'Brien's offices at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and home, contacted his parents, and tried to attend tapings of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He was... more ›

Post Pens Punny Story on Golf Course Neighbors

Post Pens Punny Story on Golf Course Neighbors

The New York Post tells a slice-of-life story of Queens homeowners who neighbor a golf course today, employing the maximum number of golf puns possible. In its story, it tells the un-"fore"-tunate tale of neighbors who live next to the Douglaston Golf Course. The residents were "teed-off" and "taking a swing" at the city for owning a golf course that subjected them to a barrage of incoming balls and broken windows. They said that the net that was supposed to protect their homes was not "up to par" and described being virtual prisoners in their own homes. The picture caption showing one unhappy man displaying all the golf balls he found in his back yard reads "Mulligan Stew." more ›

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider Man Week

At the end of this month, your friendly neighborhood Spider Man will be all over New York for...Spider Man week! A five-borough-wide celebration (marketing ploy) featuring a ton of live events, screenings, parties and exhibits. Hyping Attractions on the Subway PA

Hyping Attractions on the Subway PA

Funny - the Daily News reports that subway conductors were told to hype the "Top of the Rock" observation deck when they pull into the 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Plaza station. While motormen and conductors think the "order is unprecedented," MTA spokesman Tom Kelly explains that it's just a free "courtesy" to let people know about attractions.

A spokeswoman for Tishman Speyer, co-owners of Rockefeller Center, was tight lipped. "We are declining to comment," the spokeswoman said. more ›

Mackie at Christie's

Mackie at Christie's

Incase you woke up this morning thinking you'd like to buy something totally impractical with your rent money, then have we got good news for you. Designer Bob Mackie joins up with Christie's to auction off his "scene-stealing" fashions. They've been draped over stars like Sharon Stone, Carol Burnett, Cher, Brooke Shields, Sir Elton John and Diana Ross, and his costumes have been in some of the most popular Broadway shows. Now you can own a piece of it all, and of course if you're free at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon, we're sure you can afford it as well. So loosen up the purse strings, make funny hand gestures and bid away on a dress that Cher once sweat in as Christie's and Julien's present . . .Costume & Couture [from the Private Archives of Bob Mackie]. more ›

Drink Up: Club 49

Drink Up: Club 49

Inspired by this week's Time Out New York cover story this week, we visited a new bar/lounge in Times Square- we went to Times Square in search of a bar that would be entertaining for out-of-towners. At a glance, Club 49 aims to be competition for Top Of The Rock but at closer inspection it's bottle service among the billboards. With uninspired decor on the main level- semi-private booths and curved cocktails tables against the windows- we were trying to put our finger on what the place reminded us of, the lounges at any W Hotel, definitely (you can even see the huge W sign from the bar), but something else. Then we got it- Ghost Bar in Vegas, another bar high above the city, within a hotel and notably full of people who can't see the view from the scene. more ›

Mariah Is Coming Back

Mariah Is Coming Back

There's a hilarious item in Ben Widdicombe's Gatecrasher about Mariah Carey turning down the chance to perform on the Today show, opting instead to promote her upcoming album, The Emancipation of Mimi, on Good Morning America. Widdicombe writes, "The source laughs, 'They think the album will be so huge that the 3,000 people Rockefeller Plaza holds won't be enough. Times Square can hold 10,000.'" Gothamist is laughing also, unless Carey's record label is hiring 7,000 extras. At her wedding to Tommy Mottola, Gothamist's friend's younger sister was recruited by a friend's mother/Sony executive to be a flower girl for the wedding, so Mariah could have tons of little flower girls surrounding her, so you never know. Gothamist would pick the Today show over Good Morning, America, if only because the Today staff can more convincingly act like they like some pop artist's music; we're still not buying Diane Sawyer's act. more ›
