The Manhattan District Attorney's office announced that the Reverend David Ajemian was arrested on charges of stalking and threatening Conan O'Brien. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston placed Ajemian, a 46-year-old priest in Stoneham, Massachusetts, on leave. The DA's office says that Ajemian had sent letters (some on parish letterhead!) to O'Brien's offices at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and home, contacted his parents, and tried to attend tapings of Late Night with Conan O'Brien. He was...

Members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike today after talks between the WGA and Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers collapsed last night. WGA East members are striking outside of NBC headquarters at Rockefeller Plaza on 49th Street today - 30 Rock's Tina Fey, Saturday Night Live's Seth Meyers, and the Daily Show's John Oliver were on the line, as were many other writers for other productions - and other...
COMEDY: Check out The 7:00 Workout tonight at UCB, where God's Pottery test out some new material on you. The show is listed as being at 6:30pm, which is just confusing - so, get there early? We interviewed the Christian duo last month, where they told us they'd only leave this fine city "if the Al Gore flooding movie is correct." So catch 'em while you can!
The New York Post tells a slice-of-life story of Queens homeowners who neighbor a golf course today, employing the maximum number of golf puns possible. In its story, it tells the un-"fore"-tunate tale of neighbors who live next to the Douglaston Golf Course. The residents were "teed-off" and "taking a swing" at the city for owning a golf course that subjected them to a barrage of incoming balls and broken windows. They said that the net that was supposed to protect their homes was not "up to par" and described being virtual prisoners in their own homes. The picture caption showing one unhappy man displaying all the golf balls he found in his back yard reads "Mulligan Stew."
Courtney Love (who recently sold some of her own stuff on Ebay) has announced she'll be putting almost all of Kurt Cobain's belongings up for auction at Christie's.
At the end of this month, your friendly neighborhood Spider Man will be all over New York for...Spider Man week! A five-borough-wide celebration (marketing ploy) featuring a ton of live events, screenings, parties and exhibits. The city has been central to the Marvel Comics legend since Spidey's beginning in 1962, so it only makes sense to launch the latest movie here.
Funny - the Daily News reports that subway conductors were told to hype the "Top of the Rock" observation deck when they pull into the 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Plaza station. While motormen and conductors think the "order is unprecedented," MTA spokesman Tom Kelly explains that it's just a free "courtesy" to let people know about attractions.
A spokeswoman for Tishman Speyer, co-owners of Rockefeller Center, was tight lipped. "We are declining to comment," the spokeswoman said.Continue reading "Hyping Attractions on the Subway PA"
Incase you woke up this morning thinking you'd like to buy something totally impractical with your rent money, then have we got good news for you. Designer Bob Mackie joins up with Christie's to auction off his "scene-stealing" fashions. They've been draped over stars like Sharon Stone, Carol Burnett, Cher, Brooke Shields, Sir Elton John and Diana Ross, and his costumes have been in some of the most popular Broadway shows. Now you can own a piece of it all, and of course if you're free at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon, we're sure you can afford it as well. So loosen up the purse strings, make funny hand gestures and bid away on a dress that Cher once sweat in as Christie's and Julien's present . . .Costume & Couture [from the Private Archives of Bob Mackie].
Inspired by this week's Time Out New York cover story this week, we visited a new bar/lounge in Times Square- we went to Times Square in search of a bar that would be entertaining for out-of-towners. At a glance, Club 49 aims to be competition for Top Of The Rock but at closer inspection it's bottle service among the billboards. With uninspired decor on the main level- semi-private booths and curved cocktails tables against the windows- we were trying to put our finger on what the place reminded us of, the lounges at any W Hotel, definitely (you can even see the huge W sign from the bar), but something else. Then we got it- Ghost Bar in Vegas, another bar high above the city, within a hotel and notably full of people who can't see the view from the scene.
For the lush, the fall harvest is the best time of year. Wine events are as plentiful as hot dog vendors in Times Square. Whether your serious about wine or just like your drink, Gothamist has found some great wine events to keep us busy this week…
June 13 - 26: Festival de Helados
There's a hilarious item in Ben Widdicombe's Gatecrasher about Mariah Carey turning down the chance to perform on the Today show, opting instead to promote her upcoming album, The Emancipation of Mimi, on Good Morning America. Widdicombe writes, "The source laughs, 'They think the album will be so huge that the 3,000 people Rockefeller Plaza holds won't be enough. Times Square can hold 10,000.'" Gothamist is laughing also, unless Carey's record label is hiring 7,000 extras. At her wedding to Tommy Mottola, Gothamist's friend's younger sister was recruited by a friend's mother/Sony executive to be a flower girl for the wedding, so Mariah could have tons of little flower girls surrounding her, so you never know. Gothamist would pick the Today show over Good Morning, America, if only because the Today staff can more convincingly act like they like some pop artist's music; we're still not buying Diane Sawyer's act.
During the open house, the National Weather Service will be conducting 30 minute tours, giving short hurricane presentations, and will launch a weather balloon in the afternoon. It sounds like the perfect opportunity to get our weather geek on and check out some very cool gear.
So far, the weather looks promising, but you can check on the day of at Gothamist Weather. And summer movies at Bryant Park start on June 21.
rion has some wonderful pictures of the 79 foot Christmas tree going up at Rockefeller Center. rion was very industrious - she took the photographs from both on the ground at Rockefeller Plaza and from a very tall building's windows.
