Last Night's Action: One Step Backward

  • Tri-City 8, Brooklyn 6: Eric Nielsen didn't get out of the second -- when Tri-City scored four runs -- and that didn't help the Cyclones, who couldn't peck away enough.

Mets' Outburst Helps Them Avoid Precipice

Mets' Outburst Helps Them Avoid Precipice

Given the pitching matchup entering Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, Sunday's high-scoring affair should come as no surprise. With a slugfest win over the Cardinals, the Mets tied the series at two games apiece before Monday's Game 5. They can thank Carlos Delgado, who hit a three-run homer in the fifth to snap a 2-2 tie before adding two-run double during a six-run sixth inning. more ›

Last Night's Action: Yanks Make Deals; Mets Sweep

Last Night's Action: Yanks Make Deals; Mets Sweep

The question is, will they make a move before the trading deadline? This seems to be the year, so giving up youth for a proven pitcher would be prudent, but the ghosts of the Kazmir trade still haunt the franchise and may keep Omar from improving his club. more ›

    Mets Officially Part with Piazza

    Mets Officially Part with Piazza

If the ceremonies at the end of the season and the trade for Paul Lo Duca didn't make it clear enough, it's now official. The Mets will not be re-signing Mike Piazza (at least until May 1st) as they declined to offer salary arbitration, effectively ending his eight-year stint with the team. The 37 year-old Hall of Fame bound catcher hit only .251 with 19 home runs and 62 RBI last season. The .251 average was his worst since entering the Majors in 1992. In all likelihood, Piazza is now on his way to an American League team to be a designated hitter. more ›

    Slipping Back to .500

    Slipping Back to .500

Saturday’s loss must have stung more than Sunday’s. Neither Pedro Martinez nor Mark Mulder was dominant, and the Mets rallied to take a one-run lead into the 8th. Even struggling Kazuo Matsui pitched in with a three-run triple. But Roberto Hernandez, perhaps the most consistent Mets’ reliever this season, gave up two runs in the eighth, and the Mets lost 7-6. On Sunday, the Mets’ line-up ran into Matt Morris, managing just two runs on 6 hits in a 4-2 loss. more ›

Glavine Amazes in Win over Cards

Glavine Amazes in Win over Cards

The offense for the Mets was supplied by Cliff Floyd and his bat. After starting the season with a 23-game hitting streak, Floyd was in a 2-22 slump entering the game. One might say that changed with his two home runs last night off of Staten Island's Jason Marquis, who only allowed three hits in seven innings. more ›

Mets Hold On to Defeat Braves

Mets Hold On to Defeat Braves

Aaron Heilman started the game for the Mets and had a performance reminiscent of his one hitter two starts ago. Heilman pitched 7 innings of 2-hit ball and only allowed 1 run to the Braves. It looked like Heilman would be the tough luck loser until the 6th inning when the Mets knocked Horacio Ramirez out of the game by picking up 5 runs. Mike Piazza had an RBI double, Cliff Floyd had a two run homer, and Wright added his own two-run home run before the inning was over. The 5 run inning was the 7th time the Mets have scored 5 runs in an inning this season. more ›

Mets Start Second Half with Extra Inning Victory

A week ago, the Mets were in Philadelphia splitting a four game series with the Phillies. Last night, they started another four game series at Shea and got off to a great start. They won the game in 11 innings, 3-2 (box score). With the victory, they are a game out of first place, trailing the Phillies and the Braves. more ›
