Spotted in Williamsburg: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law

It doesn't take much detective work to find out that the cast and crew of Sherlock Holmes have landed in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The film stars Robert Downey Jr., Rachel McAdams, and Jude Law, and they're all readying for their close-ups at the Marcy Avenue Armory at 355 Marcy Avenue, according to Filming in Brooklyn who notes the location is the same "where the interiors of Neville’s house were shot for I Am Legend." The NY Post even has some photographic evidence of the two male leads, and report back that "the Hollywood heavyweights were dressed in 19th-century period wear yesterday...Law sporting a distinguished mustache." The movie, which is actually set in London, is being directed by Guy Ritchie, but at least he's got the Williamsburg Bridge to separate him from his ex and A-Rod.

This week at the movies, two actors known for their intensity on (and off) screen have new flicks coming out. The Oscar-winning over-reactor Russell Crowe goes the romantic comedy route with about an English businessman softened by life in Provence. With a script by Peter Mayle, a novelist well versed in the French countryside, and direction by Ridley Scott, Crowe as Max Skinner actually comes across as incredibly charming. He's sure to send many loins a fluttering as he woos French hottie, Marion Cotillard on his newly inherited chateau and vineyard. Albert Finney, as his beloved uncle, and Freddie Highmore, as the young Max, also have some very cute exchanges together. All of these elements make for a light but well-made movie, that surprisingly entertaining.

Of course the big news in New York movies this weekend is the New York Film Festival which kicks off tomorrow at Lincoln Center. However, in an attempt reserve our NYFF excitement for a full post tomorrow, let's just focus on the regular releases. Here we go.

Action adventure, animated sci-fi, iconic '80s actresses and French sexual intrigue—this weekend is a good one for movie going in New York. Draw your swords landlubbers, Gore Verbinski's sequel to his bombastic film based on an amusement park ride is out this weekend, . In this installment, shot at the same time as the forthcoming part III, Johnny Depp's brilliant Jack Sparrow searches for Davy Jones's chest to free himself from some sort of curse. There's a boat-load of twisty-turning plot in this 2 hour and a half movie but fortunately there's also tons of great action, Kiera Knightley looking adorable in pirate gear and a huge tentacled man eating beast. So basically, something for everyone.

Gothamist loves movies (especially those by any "Anderson" director). That's why each Friday, we'll highlight the best and worst in both indie and blockbuster movies as well as the latest in trailers (because admit it, they're the best part of the movie-going experience). We will try our hardest to refrain from such overused phrases as "a non-stop laugh riot", "high octane fun" and "so funny I pished myself!" But no promises.

In NY, the network airs on WLIB 1190AM (LA: KBLA 180AM; Chicago: WNTD 950AM). The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz looked at Air America a few weeks ago. Jeff Jarvis has been listening and says, "." Well, the station probably doesn't want to be confused with Air America, the airplane pilot "comedy" with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.

- Supposed new love interest for Barbie, "Blaine," sounds like a loser as well...not to mention gay.
- Who knew that one of Barbie's alter-egos was Modern Barbie, which is Barbie as an "." Uh oh - love triangle! Gothamist doesn't understand the various parallel worlds Barbie is able to live in. Typically, though, the black Barbie, "Simone," just gets the description, "an exotic makeup artist who's always dressed to impress." Exotic! Ha!
- Kids don't need a 101 on Tragic Movie Stars' Lives with James Dean or Marilyn Monroe dolls, do they? They can watch E! or Entertainment Tonight for the Robert Downey Jr. and Courtney Love updates, can't they?
- We can't tell if Fashion Insider Ken is gay or just metrosexual.

Tonight, the 92nd Street Y has a screening of the documentary, The Party's Over, which follows Philip Seymour Hoffman as he looks inside the political process during the 2000 Republican and Democratic conventions, with a post-screening question & answer session with Hoffman as well. The film was directed by Donovan Leitch and Rebecca Chaiklin, (produced by Robert Downey Sr., Stanley Buchtal, Robert Downey Jr. and Leitch) and features Susan Sarandon, Bonnie Raitt, Eddie Vedder, Noam Chomsky, Willie Nelson, Newt Gingrich and Courtney Love among various artists, activists, and politicans interviewed.

It's good to know that Winona Ryder is basically like the Welcome Wagon for any semi-cute up-and-coming would-be rocker - at least someone is looking out for the lads. That's why she was the focus of a VH1 All Access:Winona Rules! Truly, it makes sense for Winona to be featured, because as Courtney Love says, as quoted on the show's site, "You’re no one in music until you have feuded with me or until you sleep with Winona!”
