A woman is suing the NYPD after her humiliating, misguided arrest for shoplifting at a Queens Rite Aid. As 30-year-old Leah Fishman left the store a year ago, items in her purse that she had purchased weeks earlier for a total of around $20 set off the store's alarm. Fishman tells the Daily News that initially, "When the police came, I was relieved." But her suit alleges that the police did no investigation whatsoever, and mocked her as she was being detained. "Oh look, she has tears," a detective said, according to the lawsuit. "It won't help you; you're still going to jail."

Free Parking At Park Slope Rite-Aid!
This afternoon Elbow-Toe posted this photo to Twitter, saying: "According to reports she was trying to park." (To be fair, parking is a bitch in that neighborhood.) We're told the crash scene was the Rite-Aid on the corner of 5th Avenue and 10th Street in Park Slope, and are currently awaiting more details.
Granny Punching Robber Caught
Last week, it was reported that a 91-year-old cashier at a Long Island Rite Aid tried to fight off a robber who punched her. Florence Critelli had said, "I want him to get caught because I want to smack him," and maybe now she'll get her chance: Police arrested a suspect yesterday for a similar robbery.
91-Year-Old Cashier Fought With Robber At L.I. Rite Aid
A 91-year-old cashier at the East Northport Rite Aid was back at work today after being attacked by a robber yesterday. Florence Critelli, who tried to fight him off, told the Post, "I want him to get caught because I want to smack him."
Shameless Bike Lane Block, Courtesy Rite Aid Truck
Believe it or not, we don't publish every egregious bike lane blocking photo that lands in our inbox, but this one's just too delicious to pass up. Taken on the Eighth Avenue bike lane, which is separated from traffic by a row of parking, exhibit A shows a Rite Aid tractor trailer transforming the bike lane into an unloading zone. The reader who sent it tells us this was by the Rite Aid on West 20th Street. Though it's probably tempting for cyclists to react self-riteously to such a photo, one wonders how businesses are supposed to receive deliveries with such a bike lane design. Certainly, they can't be expected to park around the corner and use a hand truck!
Spotted in Greenpoint: Snuggie Sale
That adult onesie that everyone has been fawning over for months, The Snuggie, may be more attainable than you think! No need to pay $19.99 + shipping and wait for what seems like months for it to arrive, you can just go to your local Rite Aid! The one in Greenpoint, on Manhattan between Calyer and Meserole, is stocked up and selling them for just $14.99 (and you get a booklight, though we hear it's of questionable quality). Now someone needs to have another Snuggie Pub Crawl before summer arrives (but ladies, keep in mind that if you're wearing your Snuggie outdoors, "You need some high-heeled boots. It looks stupid with flats").
Rite-Aid Denies Gay P.D.A. Ban
Queerty has it that a Rite-Aid on Sixth Avenue and 13th Street posted this anti-gay P.D.A. sign in their store over the weekend. If true, it doesn’t seem like the smartest way to win over the Greenwich Village/Chelsea clientele. But employee Kularee Kamhal, who worked there all weekend, swears “it’s a lie.” There is no manager or employee named Tom Marquez; according to her the store’s manager is one Jose Santos. Something doesn’t add up here; maybe this is all just a desperate attempt at sabotage from a rival Duane Reade?
Cuomo Blasts Drugstores Selling Expired Drugs, Food
Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced an investigation that found Rite Aid and CVS drugstore chains selling expired goods, like medicine, milk, eggs, and baby formula. Cuomo called it a "double whammy for the consumer."
Drugstore Proliferation Now Absurd
New Yorkers like to joke about the spread of chain drugstores, bank branches, and Starbucks in the city, but residents of Sunnyside, Queens can claim bragging rights in a shining example of the phenomena. Greenpoint Avenue is home to two adjacent Rite Aid drugstores, which sit literally right next to each other. According to the Daily News, it initially appears to be one giant store, but, in fact, they are two separately owned and operated...
Taping and Taunting Traffic Agents
This morning, the Today show featured a segment about a NYC resident (and Mets fan, judging by his hat) who calls himself Jimmy Justice and spends his days documenting various civil servants - mainly traffic enforcement agents - committing various sins. It's like Uncivil Servants with more than a dash of confrontational TV.
Market Grossness and the "Three Strike" Law
"Rodent activity was particularly rampant near retail displays of candy, snack and pet foods. 16.9 lbs. of rodent defiled foods were seized from stock room shelves on 10/26/05 and 12 lbs. of rodent defiled Iams cat food were seized from retail shelves on 8/24/05.
Messing with the Uptown "Broken Bottle" Scammers
One of our most commented-posts was the one about various scams that are pulled on people, especically on susceptible people unused to New York City-style hustle, grifts and cons. And many con artists do like to stalk areas that are flush with tourists and students. So we were pleased that all of the tips and scams our commenters had given us the first time around could benefit other people, such as reader Josh who sent us this email:
So I was hurriedly walking uptown on Broadway from 96th street to make a meeting with a professor--i was already late because they were running the 1 trains express and I decided it would be faster to walk to 116th rather than to go to 145 and then down again, local. As I passed 104th st, there was this couple, looking kind of down and out, he had a suitcase, and they were headed towards this payphone (ahead of me, to my right). As I sped up to pass them, the man bumped into me and dropped the black plastic bag he was carrying in his right hand. As I was on my phone at the time, i kept walking after saying sorry as I passed--it seemed like his fault. But I heard the lady calling, "Excuse me, excuse me!" after me...more ›
Kim's Video on Bleecker Replaced By...
Jeez-- just what the Village needs-- another Duane Reade! Kim's Video used to live in the basement of this building on the corner of Bleecker and Laguardia-- it was a dank, fetid, dark little hole, but it was the only place within ten blocks where you could rent a video or DVD, and the clerks knew what they were talking about. The facade of the building was decorated with strange plexiglass sculptures-- it's too bad that we can't find a picture of them online.
