Hey, happy Chinese New Year, everyone! Time to drive out the old spirits of the past year and welcome the good spirits of the new year. The Chinese do this with explosions and fireworks; we'll do it rock-style, with extremely loud noises. Such as:

Gothamist returned to Coney Island on Saturday for the second time in two weekends to take in a show at Keyspan Park. While both had stellar bands playing, the mood this week was far different from the energetic evening the White Stripes gave us . Seven acts were set to take the stage between 1:30 and 10:00 this weekend: Nine Black Alps, Mando Diao, Death From Above 1979, Rilo Kiley, Built to Spill, Gang of Four and The Pixies. Out of all four of the Across the Narrows concerts this weekend, this seemed to be, all around, the strongest lineup. Despite this, the turnout on a beautiful fall day was miniscule. Maybe it was due to the fact that the bigger bands have all played New York rather frequently over the past year, but the park was notably empty up until the Pixies came on, and even then, the 8,500 seats remained almost completely empty and there was still plenty of space on the field. Very strange for the caliber of talent on the bill. It gave the whole festival a very amateurish feel.

It's going to be a slow week in music. American Analog Set are playing Joe's Pub, but that sold out before it went on sale (download an AAS/Kelly Clarkson mashup). Sick of it All and The Bouncing Souls are playing CBGB benefits, but good luck getting in to those (see what it will likely look like inside). Louis XIV are at Irving Plaza. You're definitely too cool to go to that (watch a NSFW video). Even uncooler would be showing up at a Bush side project, or either of the two sold out nights Our Lady Peace are at Bowery Ballroom (tix on sale for a 3rd show at Webster Hall). You don't go to Jersey and you don't go to venues that hold more than 1000 people, so count out (best band on the planet) Green Day's show at Giants Stadium and the Coldplay/Rilo Kiley one at PNC Bank Arts Center (where Alice Cooper is playing tonight). Looking for a free summer show? A jam band is playing South Street Seaport on Sunday (like Ted Leo did on Friday), and as of Thursday we're into September.

Is that the sun that woke us up this morning? It won't last for long so enjoy it while you can. It's the unofficial start to summer this long weekend, and unless you're one of those people who uses the word "summer" as a verb, then you're sticking around the city. Hopefully you get to leave the office a little early though...

As soon as Bright Eyes (and the Faint) are finished hogging Webster Hall this week, former Conor Oberst label mate Rilo Kiley take over for a two day run. Former child actress Jenny Lewis leads this band of safe OC-ready indie pop-rockers. For a taste of Rilo, download MP3s of their entire Coachella performance. Portastatic and The Brunettes open both shows on Thursday and Friday.

This is where Gothamist tells you about all of the shows you should buy tickets for NOW because they will in fact sell out, and you will in fact be scanning Craigslist in hopes of finding a ticket for double the face value at the last minute. So pay attention and purchase wisely. This months list was particularly hard to compose because of the ratio of really good shows to the amount of money we have in our pocket.

A memorial concert in the memory of Elliott Smith is set for November 3 at the Henry Fonda Theater in L.A. Performers include Beck, Beth Orton, Rilo Kiley, Future Pigeon, Alaska, Lou Barlow, Grandaddy, Radar Bros and other special guests. Unsurprisingly, tickets are already sold out. The concert will be preceded by “Strange Parallel," a documentary about Smith by Steve Hanft. Proceeds will benefit the Elliott Smith Foundation for Abused Children.
