Subway Harassment Largely Unreported,
According to Manhattan Beep's Survey

Second Avenue Sagas notes that the survey was emailed to 20,000 people (the Manhattan Borough President's office worked with a number of organizations, including the Straphanger's Campaign, Right Rides, NOW, Hollaback, to get out the word about the online survey), which suggests the statistics could be somewhat inflated, given that the almost 1800 respondents who did fill out the subway may have been weighted towards people who have experienced subway harassment (indeed, about 67% of the respondents are women). This is a point the study acknowledges as a limitation, but says it still serves as "an invaluable 'snapshot' of a problem that persists but is inherently difficult to quantify." more ›

WABC 7 ran a story about a 29-year-old woman who was followed home from the Vernon Boulevard subway station in Long Island City and then attacked in the lobby of her Greenpoint apartment building. The woman, who works in Manhattan as a bartender, was coming home around 3AM and decided to take the subway instead splurging on a cab. more ›

Police Investigate Sexual Assaults in the Village and Bronx

Two separate sexual attacks, one in Greenwich Village and the other in the Bronx, on Sunday have left people worried. In the Greenwich Village incident, a young woman had left Society Bar and Restaurant at LaGuardia and Bleecker and was trying to hail a cab. Police now say the woman entered a dark sedan voluntarily; the Post reports that it's "unclear if the driver was someone she knew or if the man posed as a livery cab driver." One of the three men in the car raped her, before dropping her off in Midtown East. more ›

The Paradox Of A Safer New York

The Paradox Of A Safer New York

How do you stay safe? We think that McGruff the Crime Dog's tips for safety for women actually have great application to mean. The "scary NY" (think dirtier, grittier) is the New York seen in Midnight Cowboy, Panic in Needle Park, Serpico or Crocodile Dundee. And those who think that Sex and the City is NYC: In one episode, Carrie was mugged for her purse and shoes. For more "scary" city stories, check the archives of Scary NY. People - just because you have a cellphone doesn't mean you're safe. And our own Laren teaches a self defense class at Prepare and reminds us that there's an open house/graduation on Tuesday, 8:00 pm at 147 W. 25th St. (between 6th & 7th Avenues). Another new resource for getting home safe is Right Rides. more ›

Williamsburg Rapists Caught

Williamsburg Rapists Caught

A couple weeks ago, someone emailed Gothamist about an all volunteer organization they were starting to provide women in Brooklyn and lower Manhattan (at this point) would be guaranteed free rides home and door to door escorts, where at least two volunteers (one being a woman) would make sure you got home safe. Please email us again or comment about - we've misplaced your contact info. It's a great idea and we're curious if it started. [UPDATED:] Thanks to all the readers who emailed and commented - the organization is Right Rides. Read the comments more information as well. more ›
