Islanders 4 Carolina 3 (Shootout): Rick DiPietro had a stellar return to the ice. After missing over a month thanks to his bad fighting skills, DiPietro stopped 29 shots during the game, stopped a penalty shot in OT and made both saves in the shootout. PA Parenteau clinched the win with the second Islander goal of the shootout.
Last Night's Action: Rick's Back, Red Bulls Return
Last Night's Action: A Great Homecoming
Islanders 5 Calgary 2: Nathan Lawson got to play in front of his hometown fans and he made it count. The Calgary native was called upon in the second period when Rick DiPietro had to leave the game with a lower-body injury. In came Lawson who stopped 28-of-29 shots he faced and made his Mom cry. It all added up to the third-straight win for the Islanders.
Last Night's Action: A Perfect Night
Rangers 4 Phoenix 3 (Shootout) New York is perfecting the art of the comeback. Two nights after stunning Pittsburgh with a four-goal third period, the Rangers erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to beat the Coyotes. Derek Stepan tied things up at 3 in the third and Erik Christensen scored the only goal of the shootout to make a winner out of Marty Biron.
Last Night's Action: The Streak Is Over!
Islanders 2 Devils 0: In a battle between two of the worst teams in hockey, the Islanders emerged with their first win since October. Rick DiPietro stopped 29 shots, 13 in the third period to snap the Islanders 14-game streak without a win. Jesse Joensuu and Rob Schremp scored for New York.
Last Night's Action: The Islanders Won
- Islanders 3 Buffalo 2 (Shootout): The Islanders took it to the limit, blowing a 2-0 lead and prevailing in the eight round of the shootout. New York built a two-goal lead 15 minutes into the second period, but Buffalo cut that deficit in half 21 seconds later. They added a goal midway through the third period to tie things up and eventually the game went to overtime. And that’s where Trent Hunter proved to be the hero with his goal in the eighth round. Rick DiPietro earned his first win of the year with 31 saves.
- Colorado 3 Devils 1: The Devils kept shooting, but Craig Anderson was ready. Anderson stopped 37-of-38 shots, allowing only a goal to Rob Niedermayer as the Devils fell in Colorado.
- St. Louis 4 Rangers 1: Brian Boyle scored on a bad Blues’ turnover, but that was all the scoring the Rangers could do (again). St. Louis netted three in the third for the win.
Last Night's Action: No Wins Here
- New Orleans 103 Nets 99: They came close to another win, actually leading in the final seconds, but Chris Paul hit a layup with eight seconds left to put New Orleans up for good. The Nets had one last chance, but Yi was called for setting an illegal screen to clear a path for Devin Harris.
- Islanders 4 Dallas 3: Rick DiPietro made it back on the ice, but he couldn’t hold a 2-1 lead. Dallas blitzed the Islanders with 15 shots and three goals in the second period to earn the win.
- Tampa Bay 3 Devils 0 (Postponed in the second period): Turn the lights back on! A failure with some of the lights at The Rock forced the postponement of Friday’s game. The game will resume at 9:12 left in the second period at a later date.
Last Night's Action: Break Time
Markus Naslund got things going with a power play goal in the first and after Anaheim tied it, Freddy Sjostrum put them ahead again with a shorthanded goal. Anaheim tied it again at the end of the second, but Scott Gomez scored his first power play goal of the season to put them in front for good.
Last Night's Action: Glad They Could Help
Last Night's Action: Double Downer
Despite the big deficit, the Islanders didn’t pull Rick DiPietro and they made the score respectable with goals by Mark Streit and Jon Sim.
Last Night's Action: Wins For Everyone
- Rangers 4, Flyers 3: The Rangers, 4-0, are off to their best start in 25 years after defeating the Flyers on Saturday. Last Night's Action: Red-Hot Rangers Get Revenge
Rangers 4, Islanders 1: Two days after having their dramatic rally ruined in a shootout, the Rangers crushed the Islanders, 4-1, and continued their surge at the season's most critical times. They drew Wade Dubielewicz in goal -- Rick DiPietro had missed too much time following the death of his grandmother -- but most goalies would have had trouble Thursday. The Rangers led this one 89 seconds into the game on a Brendan Shanahan goal. Sean Avery may have broken off contract negotiations. but he's also breaking off great slapshots from the slot. Scott Gomez also scored, and Avery enjoyed the stat-padder of all stat-padders, an empty-netter in a game already decided. Sean Bergenheim had the Islanders' only goal.
Last Night's Action: They Keep On Winning
The Islanders keep giving Garth Snow a reason to believe. Thursday it was a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay that put New York back into a playoff spot.
Last Night's Action: Rising Stock

Last Night's Action: Not Happy With a Point
Last Night's Action: Rivalry Night
Jamal Crawford led the way with 35 points and eight assists, including a huge three-pointer when the game was tied at 102. Zach Randolph had 24 points and 11 rebounds Vince Carter had 26 and Richard Jefferson 22 in the loss.
Last Night's Action: Brodeur Saves Devils
- Devils 2, Sabres 1 (SO): Aggressive play cost the Devils the win in regulation, but Martin Brodeur, Brian Gionta and Patrik Elias too center stage in the shootout to allow the Devils to continue their home dominance. They have picked up 21 of 22 points at their new Prudential Center in the last 11 games. Things didn't look so rosy when Jason Pominville tied the game with 1:47 to go, but the Devils bounced back. They held out during Buffalo's dominance of the extra session to make use of Brodeur in the shootout.
- Lightning 5, Rangers 3: Spotting the Lightning a three-goal lead didn't seem to be a good move. After Jaromir Jagr opened the scoring, Tampa Bay struck for four straight, and the Rangers couldn't recover.
- Canucks 3, Islanders 2 (SO): The Islanders can't be happy they traveled all the way to the Pacific Northwest only to see that second point disappear after a goal between the legs of Rick DiPietro. But he can't be blamed for this loss. His 43 saves were the only reason the Islanders made it to the extra session and the shootout.
Last Night's Action: The Islanders Start Badly
And now it’s the Islanders turn to head out to Western Canada and based on Monday’s 4-0 thrashing, they may have the same problems the Rangers did. Early in the second, Ales Hemsky skated in on two defenders and through a harmless shot towards the net, that Rick DiPietro somehow let in and the rout was on. The Oliers added two more goals in the second and another one in the third to complete the scoring. New York outshot Edmonton 35-33, but Mathieu Garon kept the puck out of the net.
Last Night's Action: One Point In Canada
Unfortunately for New York, Ryan Hollweg took a stupid boarding penalty and his five-minute major penalty combined with Martin Staraka’s holding penalty resulted in a 5-on-3 advantage for the Oilers. Edmonton converted and their second power-play goal of the game looked like it would hold up. But, Sean Avery drew a big penalty late in the third and with the goaltender pulled, the Rangers converted with six second left in the game, thanks to Chris Drury and after overtime, things headed to a shootout.
Last Night's Action: Get Out Of Canada!
New York has had a tough start to 2008 and will look to rebound Saturday night in Edmonton.
Last Night's Action: There's a Reason He's a Backup
But Dubielewicz doesn't deserve all the blame. Ottawa has plenty of talent and the highest points total in the Eastern Conference. After stonewalling to a scoreless first period, the Senators put up three goals in the middle session to suck the drama out of this one. Bill Guerin scored both Islanders goals, with the second coming in garbage time.
Last Night's Action: The Rangers Get Back To Winning
The game was stopped midway through the second period after an ugly collision between Colton Orr and former Ranger Matt Cullen. Cullen took this worst of it as he was momentarily knocked unconscious and had to leave the game. While it didn’t look intentional, the referee assessed an interference penalty and a game misconduct on Orr. Orr should expect to hear from the league office in Toronto shortly.
Last Night's Action: A Pair Of Wins
Things got testy at the end of the game as Shane Doan took a swipe at the puck after Rick DiPietro had saved it and a scrum erupted behind the net. Doan took the worst of it penalty wise as he received a game misconduct.
Last Night's Action: Aren't These Teams Bad?
Sonics 117, Knicks 110: Knicks fans deserve a lot of credit. No one's pointing out how hard it is to chant "Fire Isiah." That phrase has a ton of vowel sounds. They held off for part of this game, but at the end, the result was the same. Zach Randolph is the only self-respecting Knick, though Jamal Crawford has been putting up better numbers with Stephon Marbury still out. The sum of the parts is...
Last Night's Action: Addition By Subtraction?
Knicks 100, Nets 93: No Stephon Marbury, and the Knicks take down the Nets. Of course, the Nets didn't have Jason Kidd (headache), so who knows which team was worse off. Richard Jefferson's heroics couldn't get the job done for the Nets, who continue to play inexplicably poorly at home following road games. Jamal Crawford filled the backcourt "void" for the Knicks with 29 points, and Zach Randolph had 25. Richard Jefferson had 31 points...
Last Night's Action: Rangers Get A Big W
Rangers 5 Ottawa 2: The Senators may be in a funk of late, but they still have the best record in the Eastern Conference. That may not last for too much longer as the Rangers beat Ottawa soundly Saturday afternoon, scoring three goals in the first period and forcing a goaltending change. Everything seemed to work for New York as the power play scored twice, Brendan Shanahan had two goals and Blair Betts even got...
Last Night's Action: Role Reversal
Rangers 4, Islanders 2: It's a good thing these teams play each other eight times each season. Otherwise, the Rangers might have a confidence problem. Given enough opportunities to beat a particular opponent, any team is bound to cash in sooner or later. After losing the first three games against the Islanders, the Blueshirts finally broke through. Jaromir Jagr and Chris Drury each had a goal and an assist against Rick DiPietro. The Islanders still...
Last Night's Action: Working Overtime
Islanders 3 Ottawa 2 (Shootout): The Islanders got a huge victory Wednesday night thanks to some great goaltending from Rick DiPietro. DiPietro made 35 saves during the game and an additional 5 in the shootout to propel New York to victory. Ottawa came back from a 2-1 deficit in the third with a goal with under two minutes remaining in the game. Both teams had power plays in overtime, but were unable to convert and...
Last Night's Action: The Knicks Win!!
Knicks 85 Chicago 78: Seriously, that isn’t a misprint, the Knicks won the game! Afterwards, while the fans stormed the court and the tickertape rained down, Isiah Thomas took a minute to point out that everyone was wrong about him and that this triumph was his vindication. Ok, it didn’t quite happen that way, but based on some of the reaction you had to assume that the Knicks had actually won a big game, rather...
Last Night's Action: Isles Keep Upper Hand
Islanders 2, Rangers 1: For all the success the Rangers have had against the rest of the league, they still can't solve the Islanders. Five-game winning streak? Poof! Rick DiPietro made 18 saves and the Islanders won for the third time in three games between the two clubs. Ruslan Fedotenko and Josef Vasicek each scored in the second period, and Michal Rozsival scored a short-handed goal for the Rangers. He now has seven goals...
