After last year's mess of an awards show and this year's joke of nominations (where is love for Lauren Graham, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences?), we were going to swear off this year's Emmys. But then we realized Conan O'Brien was hosting, so we must watch and liveblog. And there's the hope of a good Steve Carrell bit, not to mention awkward reaction shots of Candy and Tori Spelling during the Aaron Spelling tribute.

The NY Times has Jennifer Steinhauer, recently released from the clutches of City Hall, look at the rash of British tourists visiting our fair city. Reasons for coming include the weak dollar (there are some things foreigners and New Yorkers can thank President Bush for), the fine drinks at NY watering holes, Macy's, the fact that we sorta speak the same language, and T.G.I. Friday's - everything that makes this city great. A spokesperson for the British Association of Travel Agents says:
"We have all seen Woody Allen movies and Sex and the City and NYPD Blue. So you think it is an exciting place you have to go to. We don't hear that it is particularly dirty or unsafe. They know it is a big city and it is going to be loud and noisy and that is all O.K."
Well, Gothamist has seen Brideshead Revisited, The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, Mike Leigh and Richard Curtis films, Blow-Up and Benny Hill, and we love you, too, Britain.

Entertainment Weekly tries to offer ways to fix Owen Wilson's movie career. Another idea: Romantic comedy, best written by Richard Curtis or someone British. Female lead should be equally original, like Zooey Deschanel (okay, she's the It Girl du jour, but I'm tired and can't think). Directed by someone with a light touch, like the Weitz brothers. Now that I'd see THAT opening day. And I think fix is a strong word. "Better position" would be my phrase of choice.
