Rumors of another big box department store following Ikea's footsteps into Red Hook have been all but confirmed by the Brooklyn Paper, which is reporting that BJ’s Wholesale Club is "on the verge of announcing plans to move into the former site of the Revere Sugar factory." That would put the members-only retailer just down the street from Ikea and bring Red Hook residents closer to fulfilling their dream of living in a world class shopping plaza. “Will there be more? Yes. It’s inevitable,” Landon McGaw, director of sales for Massey Knakal Realty Services, told the paper. And if the project is approved after a public review process, it would be the second BJ's for Brooklyn!

For an avowed non-presidential candidate, Mayor Bloomberg certainly gets more attention than some of the actual candidates. Newsweek devotes its cover story to "Mike" Bloomberg, "The Billion Dollar Wild Card," a reference to the billion dollars Mayor B has at his disposal, should be decide to run for president next year. That is so much more flattering than the "Lazy Like a Fox" cover Newsweek had of Fred Thompson! Newsweek editor-in-chief Jon Meacham got to...

Before the Beastie Boys’ concert at McCarren Park Pool last night, Gothamist attended a press conference with the 3 MC’s and verified an interesting bit of trivia: Despite having formed in Brooklyn, rehearsed often at Adam Yauch’s parent’s crib downtown, and associated themselves with the borough constantly over the decades, the band itself had not yet performed in Kings County. Mike D broke it down like so, “When we came up none of the clubs were really in Brooklyn except for L'Amour. My theory is that they didn’t really want to have hip-hop functions in Brooklyn because they figured it would just end badly. Soon there will be an arena there but there was never an arena-type venue there.” The Beastie Boys’ mainstream popularity – by '85 they were supporting Madonna on tour, by ’86 Licensed to Ill had moved five million units – outpaced the borough they helped popularize; not until the late nineties had Brooklyn gentrified to the point where there was even a venue big enough to accommodate them.

The dust-up over Rudy Giuliani's waffling over abortion is small political beans in comparison to a liability he cannot possibly shrug off. Rudy Giuliani is an unapologetic Yankees fan, and people outside of NYC (and some within the confines of the city) HATE the Yankees. With a passion. There's a fabled Broadway musical called "Damn Yankees!" and it's not about Paul Revere or George Washington. To the hometown fan and natural supporter, Giuliani's support for the Yankees (and he appeared at the Mets home re-opener following 9/11, which preceded the Yanks') seems like a no-brainer and genuine. Other policiticans from parts farther afield have donned Yankees caps and looked ridiculous.

The 22nd Annual April Fools' Day Parade is today. Did you go? We hope not, because this is a long running joke itself. During its 15th year the press was fooled and showed up to find no parade. From the Museum of Hoaxes:

The iconic dome of Red Hook's Revere Sugar Refinery will probably disappear sometime in the next couple of weeks. To memorialize this grand and gritty vestige of the neighborhood's industrial past, we'd like to collect pictures of the inside and outside of the factory. Please add yours in the links. The ones above come to us via GC, who wrote in last night:

People incensed about the Sean Bell shooting held their "Day of Outrage" protest on Wall Street today. Joe went down and got a nice set of shots.

Some sad news for fans of New York industrial architecture: demolition permits have been issued for the Revere Sugar Refinery, located on a pier off Beard Street, and sandwiched between the site of the new Fairway and the soon-to-be-built Ikea. The property was recently purchased by Thor Equities, the same company that is working on the "redevelopment" of Coney Island. The site has long been a popular destination for photographers-- but it sounds like if you want to get any last pix, you should probably get down there ASAP. Word from Curbed is that Breeze Demolition trucks are already on the premises, and demolition of the signature dome begins on Friday.
