Cop Allegedly Used Drunk Driver's Truck To Ram Estranged Wife's Car

A Newark cop has been accused of tricking a drunk driver into giving him his pickup truck so the officer could use it to ram his estranged wife's car. Officer Enrique Gonzalez has been charged with criminal mischief and receiving stolen property—police say the pickup driver thought he had lucked out when the uniformed officer, who was off-duty at the time, told him to pickup the car later: "He says, ‘Okay, I’m not going to arrest you. Park your car here. I’m going to leave the keys in the tailpipe. Come back and get the car when you’re sober,’" Police Director Samuel DeMaio said. The driver "comes back several hours later and finds the car gone." more ›

Charges Dropped Against Accused Hamster Killer

Charges Dropped Against Accused Hamster Killer

This week, a Brooklyn teenager was arrested and charged with killing her little brothers' pet hamster; it turned out that there was a whole messy family backstory to it, including at least one other hamster homicide. But now, Monique Smith, who was facing up to two years in prison, has had the charges dropped against her, after family members recanted their accounts. Even so, in a jailhouse interview with the News earlier today, she didn't sound like she had much love for hamsters: "If I saw a hamster in this filthy place, I'd kill it. I didn't kill that hamster, but I'd kill one right now because that's what I'm in here for - a b------t rodent." more ›

East Harlem Teen Shooter Was Out for Revenge

East Harlem Teen Shooter Was Out for Revenge

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the undercover officers who shot down a pistol-packing teen in East Harlem Sunday morning may well have prevented further violence. Plainclothes cops with a Manhattan anti-crime unit say they spotted 18-year-old Matthew Melendez on a street corner around 3:15 a.m. Sunday making "a furtive move to his waistband." You'll recall that "furtive movement" is the number one vague reason cited by cops in stop-and-frisk reports—and in this case Kelly says the officers' suspicion proved correct: Melendez had a gun, and took off running. more ›

Squatter Arrested For Bronx Two-Alarm Fire

The FDNY announced that fire marshals arrested a woman in connection with last week's two-alarm fire in the West Farms section of the Bronx that left four people injured, including a toddler. The FDNY says Kristen Nixon, 30, had been squatting at the Park Avenue building (which was illegally subdivided into single-room units) when she allegedly set the blaze as revenge after a fight: "She returned the morning of the fire with a flammable liquid, which she poured in the basement hallway outside the door of a bedroom where all four of the victims were staying." She was charged with arson, reckless endangerment and four counts of first-degree assault and faces up to 25 years if convicted. more ›

Man With Boiled Penis Wants Divorce, Not Prison For Wife

The Queens man whose wife dumped boiling water on his genitals as he slept Monday morning says he doesn't want his spouse of 21 years to be incarcerated, he just wants a divorce. Speaking to CBS2 from the hospital where he's recovering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns, Emmanuel Ojofietimi insisted he hasn't cheated on her... lately: "Maybe 20 years ago, 15 years ago." (He also tells the Post, "She kept nagging and nagging me all the time.") Oyindamola, his wife, is currently being held at Rikers in lieu of $100,000 bail. Yesterday nightly news crews hit the streets to gauge public reaction, and it's interesting how many people couldn't help but laugh a little, while simultaneously condemning this particularly gruesome act of revenge. Bellport resident Jessie Maldanado even admitted to CBS2 that she's considered mutilating her boyfriend's genitals if she caught him cheating. Her boyfriend, who was standing right next to her, sagely added, "I need to get that thought out of her head." What do you think? Is burning, biting, or gluing a man's rod or johnson acceptable punishment for infidelity? And for scorned ladies contemplating vengeance, the Frisky has a thorough roundup of history's most infamous paybacks. more ›

Gang Stabbing In E 26th St Apt. Lobby Leaves 1 Dead

Yesterday morning, two men were stabbed in the lobby of an apartment building on East 26th Street near Second Avenue in Manhattan. According to the Daily News, it's believed the suspects were "Gang members looking to avenge the shooting of a drug dealer... Investigators believe five men were waiting in parked cars outside the... building and jumped their victims when they stepped into the lobby just before 9:30 a.m." An 18-year-old died while a 30-year-old survived his stab wounds—both were stabbed repeatedly in the face and chest. The incident that spurred that stabbing is apparently a 4 a.m. shooting that occurred outside Pacha on West 46th Street; suspected drug dealer Michael Slater is in stable condition at Bellevue, which is just a few blocks away from the apartment building. A 21-year-old newcomer to the neighborhood told the News, "I moved here from Missouri yesterday. I didn't expect to step outside on my first morning here and see someone almost dead." more ›

Phish Fan Plants Yankee Stadium Grass At Fenway During Show

Phish Fan Plants Yankee Stadium Grass At Fenway During Show

Most Phish fans sneak a little grass into concerts in their underwear, but during the band's tour-opening show at Fenway Park on May 31st, Yankee fan Ian Ferris took it a step further: As payback for the Red Sox fan who tried to curse the Bronx Bombers by dropping a Sox jersey into wet concrete during construction of the new stadium, Ferris tried to seed the Fenway infield with grass seeds sold at Yankee Stadium. Once inside, Ferris, who manages a Hooters in Vermont, filled the bag of seeds with water and tossed it onto the infield. He tells the Post, "This is payback. If even one blade of grass sprouts on the field, I feel it was a success." It's important to have ambitions in life, but Gino Castignoli, the construction worker who buried the Red Sox jersey at Yankee Stadium, says Ferris's pitiful little gesture is futile: "My curse is working. It's typical of a Yankee fan to think you can buy a jinx in a bag. When will they learn, you don't win with your wallet but with your heart?" It's a safe bet that Castignoli also thinks Phish sucks, and Panic rules. more ›
