Every fall, the city flings open the doors to some of its most amazing, off-limits spaces for a weekend-long celebration known as Open House New York. OHNY has given New Yorkers the opportunity to see the Brooklyn Navy Yard, an MTA substation and the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, to name just a few, and it's always been free... until now.

Mohawk Reservation Drug Smuggling A Booming Business
Much of the primo, hydroponically-grown herb you'll find in New York comes from Canada, where an untold quantity passes across the border at the Akwesasne Mohawk reservation, which stretches five miles along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Naturally, the authorities would like to pull the plug on this source, so six weeks ago Joseph Resnick, the head of the NYPD's narcotics division, took a trip up there to see what could be done. The good news for tokers is that the Mohawk smugglers have this down to a science, and Resnik is "astounded at how lenient the border is."
Restaurant Week Reservation Lines Open
In case you haven't noticed, Manhattan's winter Restaurant Week is fast approaching, and participating eateries are now accepting reservations for their prix fixe specials (three-course lunches for $24.07 and dinners for $35). The confusingly named "week" is actually 12 days long, running in two intervals from January 18th through the 23rd, then continuing from the 25th through the 30th. But whatever. The key here is to do a little research, because while the Restaurant Week prix fixe at, say, 21 Club isn't much cheaper than their usual $40 pre-theater dinner prix fixe, there are some sweet deals to be had.
How Tax-Free Smoke Gets From Reservation to Your Lungs
On Monday Mayor Bloomberg announced a lawsuit against the Poospatuck Indian reservation on Long Island, in an attempt to stop the untaxed sale of 11.3 million cartons of cigarettes on the reservation per year. Today the Times has a great, long article about how the smokes travel from the wholesaler through the reservation and to the streets of New York, where "$5 Men" like "Paco" stand on corners and whisper, "Newports. Loosies. Shorts. Longs." Reporters at the reservation describe a booming business, where cigarette sales are made on a bustling main street and even out of residential trailers. One reporter saw a sign for Justin’s Smokes "on a tree outside a residential trailer. An occupant of the trailer ordered the reporter off the property, telling her it was not a cigarette shop. 'That’s just a sign on a tree,' the woman yelled."
Critic Dishes on the Momofuku Ko Reservation Mishap
To bring the Momofuku Ko Craigslist reservation controversy full circle, Insatiable Critic Gael Greene (pictured incognito) has finally published her side of the story.
Craigslister and Critic Momo-fuking with Ko
That Momofuku Ko "resi" that hit Craigslist recently, where the poster was looking for a culinary companion, was not only filled -- but the story gets juicier than kimchi consommé with pork belly.
Momofuku Ko "Resi" Hits Craigslist
The coveted Momofuku Ko reservation has reached Craigslist (again), where all in-demand items are eventually available if you're willing to pay the price (which isn't always monetary). A gentleman named "Tom" seems to have found himself a "resi" for two at Ko this week, but is lacking both funds and friends in order to properly enjoy it.
I recently achieved what most have found impossible. I have a resi for two (2) at Ko this Weds. I am offering my one extra seat to anyone who wants to treat me to this most coveted dining celebration. You pay for the food, if we have fun I will pick up the tab for the booze.more ›
Momofuku Ko Online Reservation System Drives Bruni Off the Reservation
Momofuku Ko, the trendy new 12 seat restaurant by acclaimed chef David Chang, is getting more attention for its maddening reservation system than for its food. That’s partly due to the fact that no critic has been able to get into the place and review it, not even the top dog in town, Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni.
