Sportswriters were wetting themselves with joy last night as St. Louis Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols, arguably the greatest hitter of the last decade, had a historic night in Game 3 of the World Series. Pujols hit three home runs—and went 5-for-6 with six RBIs—against the Texas Rangers as the Cardinals went on to crush the Rangers 16-7 to take a 2-1 lead in the series (watch highlights here). Remembering Sheppard, Steinbrenner At Old Timers' Day
Yesterday, the Yankees held a poignant Old Timers' Game, where former players fondly remembered owner George Steinbrenner and public address announcer Bob Sheppard. Goose Gossage said of "The Boss," "He was tougher back in our day than he was later on, over the last regime, the last decade-and-a-half. As much as we won, the more we won, the crazier he got.

He was reporting yet another burning building marring the NYC skyline from his vantage point at Yankee Stadium. His line would eventually become the partial title of a superb book written by Jonathan Mahler: Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning: 1977, Baseball, Politics, and the Battle for the Soul of a City.
Yankees Take a Must Win
Never in baseball will you hear the second game of a season considered a must win, but today's Yankee game against Tampa Bay was considered just that. After their loss to the Devil Rays yesterday, George Steinbrenner would expect a win from his $183 million Bronx All-Stars. They delivered by beating the F-Rays, 12-1 (box score). Jack Curry of The Times said it best:
