The Giants may have a case of déjà vu heading into Sunday’s game. Once again a win means they are in the playoffs and once again they are face the prospect of adverse weather conditions.

When the NFL scheduled the Jets to play the Cowboys on Thanksgiving back in the spring, it had to think it was going to get a good game between two 2006 playoff teams. Unfortunately for the league, only the Cowboys have lived up to expectations this season. Still, the game is better than some of the duds of recent years. The Cowboys look like the best team in the NFC -- which could make them...

Even if a good portion of the announced paid attendance wasn't there to see it, the Jets played an entertaining if not successful football game in their 23-20 overtime loss to the Redskins on Sunday. Kellen Clemens showed flashes of brilliance and moments of poise -- including a drive that culminated with the game-tying field goal with 10 seconds left in regulation -- but the Jets defense didn't hold up its end of the bargain....

Remember how excited some people got when Roger Clemens announced he was coming back to the Yankees? New Jets starting quarterback Kellen Clemens -- no relation, but like Roger's kids, his name does start with "K" -- won't get as much attention, but he still has quite a following. Weeks of calls for Chad Pennington to sit in favor of Clemens didn't persuade Coach Eric Mangini, but a 1-7 start has been enough for him...

  • Jets 31, Dolphins 28: Maybe this passing attack is just fine. Chad Pennington threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Jets improved to 1-2. Aside from some shaky run defense, they should feel good about this effort.
  • This is a team that is clearly on the brink. The defense hasn’t shown up in the first two games and now the players are looking for someone to blame. Antonio Pierce picked on a female reporter yesterday by blowing an air horn each time she tried to ask about the defense. He may have been trying to be funny, but coupled with his suggestion that fans write to Giants.com with suggestions to fix the defense it came off as arrogant. (As a fyi here is the contact info on Giants.com)

They really tried to blow it, but Tiki Barber wouldn’t let them. After building up a 27-7 lead the Giants held on for dear life and survived 34-28 over the Redskins. Barber had his finest game as a Giant, rushing for 234 yards and three touchdowns, including a pivotal 50-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

A look at some noteworthy (and mainly regifted) programs this week:

A better Wall Street story than those crazy big bonuses brokers are getting: The grandson of late Giants owners Wellington Mara got into a fight with another broker on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. What caused the fight? The other broker's joking words about how crappy the Giants are!

The Giants have had two weeks to stew over their humiliating loss to Seattle and plenty of time to hear and read about how bad they are. Two weeks to try and come up with a way to stop someone on defense and find their missing pass rush. Yes, this team should be motivated to play well. And two players on defense, Antonio Pierce and LaVar Arrington, both former Redskins, will definitely want to show their old team that they can play.

The youth movement with the Jets continued yesterday as they named the 36 year-old Mike Tannenbaum as their general manager. With head coach Eric Mangini, 35, the two will form the youngest coach/GM combination in the NFL. The Redskins and Chargers could have 10 year olds as their GMs and still be older than the Jets pair. Tannenbaum, who was the senior vice president for football operations and assistant general manager, takes over for Terry Bradway, who remains with the team as a "consultant for player personnel" as he has two years left on his contract.

The Giants had their chances, but they just couldn’t stop the Redskins when it mattered. Santana Moss went wild, scoring three TD’s, two of them on receptions over fifty yards, as Washington beat New York 35-20. The win keeps the Redskins in the playoff hunt and leaves the Giants facing a big game in Oakland next week if they want to win their division.

This will be a stern test for the Giants. They have yet to beat a winning team on the road in the Eli Manning era and Saturday they will face a Redskins squad with its’ season on the line and 90,000 hostile fans supporting it. Washington will also be trying to erase the memory of the 36-0 humiliation they suffered at the hands of the Giants in October.

If you only caught the last three minutes of the Giants game you would blame the defense for their 24-21 loss. After all, the Giants marched down the field and scored a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:21 left in the game only to see the Vikings drive down and kick the winning field goal. However, if you saw the whole game you saw a miserable performance by the offense coupled with a putrid performance by the special teams, five Giants turnovers and nine penalties.

The Giants played their first game ever without Wellington Mara as a member of the team and provided a reminder of the ingredients that made them great through the years, a suffocating defense and a punishing running game that led to a 36-0 victory over the Washington Redskins.

It should be a bruising battle when the Redskins come to town for a clash with the Giants Sunday at 1pm. Washington is 4-2 thanks to a strong defense and the rejuvenated Mark Brunell. Former Jet, Santana Moss, is having a stellar season averaging almost 20 yards a catch with five TD’s.

Statistically, he is the greatest receiver in team history, but in 2005 Amani Toomer had been relegated to a secondary role in the Giants offense. That all changed Sunday as Toomer made the winning catch with five seconds left in the game to give the Giants a 24-23 victory over the Broncos. Ironically, Toomer had made a last-second touchdown catch to beat the Broncos in their last visit to Giants Stadium in 1998.

7 first downs? 1 of 9 on third down? 145 total yards? New York’s offensive player of the game? Amani Toomer with 2 catches for 59 yards. Terrible.

This Sunday’s road game against a struggling Redskins (3-8) team could be a good place to start. We are having one of our psychic moments and see Eli Manning throwing for a few touchdowns and having a nice game despite the pressure he will certainly see from Washington’s blitz-happy defense. Call us over optimistic, or even drunk, but we see Eli tearing it up this weekend.

It was a great sign for Jets fans, but (unlike the Redskins) it probably had absolutely no bearing whatsoever on the pending election - other than making several thousand New Yorkers stay up a bit late.

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre is banged up with a bruise the size of a softball on his leg, but hell be making his record 212th straight start at quarterback. Favre will be doing his best to stop the Packers two game losing streak and dont count on him taking any dives like he did in 2001 to give Michael Strahan the N.F.L. single-season sack record.

The week in full from Gothamist Sports.

As all Giants fans know, defense sets the tone and the defense yesterday went a long way to turning the Giants young season around. The unit forced 7 turnovers that led to 17 points and led Big Blue to a 20-14 victory over the Redskins. It was the Giants first victory in their last nine games. The Giants have never lost 10 in a row.
