Police have ramped up their presence around the city for the tenth anniversary of 9/11, especially in light of the "specific, credible but unconfirmed threat" of a car bombing. But one tipster tells us that not all cops are focused on that terror threat. Jfluck says he was ticketed in Williamsburg last night for bike riding through a red light when there was no one around: "Cops said they had nabbed 5 people in the last hour doing the same thing. Cops Ticketing Cyclists for Red Lights Far Beyond Central Park
There's been an outcry over the NYPD cracking down on cyclists who blow through red lights in Central Park, and biking advocates hope to persuade the NYPD to adjust enforcement in the park at a meeting Monday night. But if you ride a bike outside of Central Park, don't think for a minute you're off the hook. Artist and graphic designer Tyler Lafreniere found this out the hard way last night on Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn. He writes:
Video: Cyclist Contemplates the 46 Traffic Lights in Central Park
As you probably know, the NYPD is handing out hefty $270 tickets to cyclists who roll through red lights in Central Park—even if there isn't a pedestrian in the intersection. Today, bike blogger Chasing Wheels posted this video showing just how annoying and absurd it is for cyclists to come to a complete stop at every red light, of which there are potentially 46 (if you've got unbelievably terrible luck and get stuck at red at every intersection).
More Mysterious (Or Maybe Not) Red Lights in NJ Skies
NJ residents have been seeing those mysterious red lights in the sky again. Besides having teeny earthquakes, the Daily Record reports, "Residents from several [eastern Morris Country] towns reported seeing what appeared to be between 8 and 10 red lights floating in unison in the same direction as the wind, starting at about 8:45 p.m. By 9 p.m. the lights flickered and went out, several witnesses said." These strange lights first appeared last month and back then the police suggested they were just road flares attached to balloons. While there's still no conclusive answer, the Michigan-based manufacturer of Sky Lanterns tells the Record that he thinks the lights are from his product.
