Are you missing a beautiful rare red bird? A reader sent in the above photo of the bird-in-question today, saying they had found it outside their apartment building on East 2nd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. They write: "Bird seemed quite agitated and freaked out, but with the help of a female neighbor we were able to get the bird inside and are now trying to find its owner/what to do with it." more ›

Conviction In 2006 "Red" Sniper Shootings

In 2006, a man was fatally shot and many others were injured when a sniper fired in various Queens neighborhoods over an eight hour time period. The sniper turned out to be bricklayer Matthew Colletta, who had targeted red cars and people wearing red clothing. Yesterday, Colletta was convicted of the murder of Todd Upton as well as the attempted murder of 12 other people. 2010 Tony Awards: Broadway Has Celebrities, America!

Last night's 64th Annual Tony Awards broadcast was, as usual, a desperate three-hour long televised advertisement intended to trick tourists into Broadway theaters with the hopes of seeing movie stars in person. But last night it seemed there was even more attention paid to big famous people than usual, with Denzel Washington, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Scarlett Johansson among the bold-faced winners. The spectacle was co-hosted by Sean Hayes (Will & Grace), who started off the show by planting a long, juicy kiss on Kristin Chenoweth, as a riposte to a controversial Newsweek editorial suggesting he wasn't a convincing straight man in Promises, Promises. Batali and Starbucks Team Up in Times Square

Starting today at 10 a.m. Mario Batali and Starbucks be holding court in Times Square. They'll be set up at Military Island (the intersection of Broadway and 7th Avenue between 43rd and 44th Streets) handing out hot cups of (RED) coffee to any caffeine fiend who passes by. (RED) helps raise money to fight AIDS in Africa, and has just partnered with the coffee purveyor. If you don't find yourself in Times Square on Black Friday (consider yourself lucky), you can head to any 'bucks throughout the holiday season and a five cent donation will be made to (RED) with a purchase of a holiday drink. However, Food & Wine points out that at "approximately 10:30, you can have your picture taken in the (RED) photo booth to join the (RED) community, perhaps with one of Mario's helper elves, Helena Christensen and Mary Louise Parker." more ›

Banksy, the cheeky street artist/prankster turned multimillionaire art star, was in town last week, presumably for the Damien Hirst-coordinated auction at Sotheby’s to benefit the (Project) RED campaign, which works with corporations like the Gap to raise money for the treatment of A.I.D.S. patients in Africa. The $48 million raised at the event – through the sale of works by Hirst, Banksy, Jeff Koons, Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning and others – will be distributed by the Global Fund. more ›
