Tomorrow is Record Store Day, when vinyl addicts nationwide flock to their local dealers... but there's even something for the neophytes. There will be special albums (like this Beastie Boys 7" and a just announced limited edition 12" single from Radiohead) and events in store at plenty of shops around town tomorrow (check out participating stores here), and we asked a handful of music types for some direction. Today is Record Store Day!
If you haven't already taken part, get out there for Record Store Day. Aren't limited edition vinyls with gorgeous artwork so much more personal than downloading an mp3? There are plenty of New York stores participating with special events (here's Other Music's schedule) and other one-day-only offerings (participating stores listed here). The NY Times takes a look at why it's important to support these stores before they go the way of Tower Records, saying that "In Manhattan and Brooklyn at least 80 stores have shut down in the last five years." Officials' "Campaign of Harassment" on Sound Fix
On the evening of April 3rd it was announced that Sound Fix, the record shop/cafe fixture on the corner of Bedford Avenue and N 11th Street in Williamsburg, was shut down. Since first mention the Dept. of Health has been blamed with locking the doors, but noise complaints are generally at the root of every establishment's demise.
