Yesterday's high came within a degree of setting a new record in Central Park. That was topped this afternoon when the mercury blasted up to 91 degrees, breaking the 1991 record of 89! The hot, dry weather combined with a breezy afternoon have led the Weather Service to issue a red flag warning for the area.
Just Like July a Record High
Heat to Make an Encore Performance Tomorrow
Hoo-wee, yesterday's high of 92 in Central Park smashed the old record of 84 set in 1942. It won't be nearly as warm today as a weak cold front has moved south of the city. The air mass behind the front isn't cold but it is blowing over the chilly ocean waters. Today's high in the low 80s will only be twenty degrees above normal.
Sneak Preview of Spring
Instead of another disappointing coastal storm that have been so common this winter, today brings us a storm that's much more spring-like in nature. The storm, which brought a killer tornado to Oklahoma overnight is bringing a variety of spring weather to the East coast today and tomorrow. For starters, it's warm air from the Gulf coast. Look for a high this afternoon in the upper 50s to lower 60s. Heck, JFK already set a record high of 61 this morning.
Record High Yesterday
Before yesterday December was running slightly cooler than normal. A record-tying high of 65 pushed the month to nearly a degree warmer than average and had Williamsburg residents enjoying the simple pleasures of the day without resorting to irony. As seen in today's weather graphic, a cold front arrived yesterday evening, leading to an immediate drying of the air and a gradual cooling.
Record High and Heavy Rain Today
Whoa, way too much weather happening today. First, an equation: warm, moist air + cold ground = dense fog this morning. Second, possible record high today. The record is 58, reached most recently in 1991. Since it is already 57 the record is probably in the bag. Third, rain rain rain.
