Bronx-Bred Ballplayer Sets Street Ball Record

Bronx-Bred Ballplayer Sets Street Ball Record

Though it wasn't taped or confirmed by Guinness, witnesses say Villanova guard Corey Fisher set a world record in the Bronx last weekend, scoring 105 points in a single street ball game. Dyckman Park Basketball program supervisor Isaiah Brown said, "[Fisher's tally] has to be a street ball record." When asked about carrying his team to a 138-130 victory, the 22-year-old said, "I didn't think nothing of it." Wilt Chamberlain holds the record for points scored in the NBA, when he scored 100 points at a game in 1962. more ›

City Could See Record Tourism This Year

City Could See Record Tourism This Year

According to preliminary data, New York City is on course to have 47.5 million tourists clogging our streets by the end of the year. (Kidding! We appreciate your business; just stay to the left.) That number is over half a million more than the record in 2008, and a 4% increase over last year. Last year tourism slipped for the first time since 2001, but this year puts the city closer than ever to Mayor Bloomberg's goal of getting 50 million tourists by 2012. Hey gay folks, have you made your Rainbow Pilgrimage yet? more ›

While records are always so odd and particular, this one did make for a picturesque scene! more ›

2nd Straight Day of Record-Breaking Heat Today!

2nd Straight Day of Record-Breaking Heat Today!

Today we've beaten endured the record high temperature set for Central Park on July 7th. A little after 1:30 p.m., the mercury rose to 99 degrees, besting the old record of 98 set in 1993. Listless low-five! It's stinking hot out there—literally, folks! The heat and trash still lingering from the long weekend is making this dirty town reek. As one Bed-Stuy resident put it to the Times, parts of this city smell "like cat or dog feces mixed with food that been there for weeks or something." Or as one Crotona Park father recounted, "My kids were crying, 'What’s that smell, Daddy? It smells like a rat that’s dead.' I said, 'No, mami, it’s not a rat, it’s the garbage.' " more ›

NYC Now Holds Record For Largest Dodgeball Game

Last night we sent photographer Jeanne Wilson over to The 69th Regiment Armory to check out an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest dodgeball game. The title was previously owned by San Diego, who had 450 in attendance for a game, but yesterday New York stole that honor when around 700 folks showed up to whale rubber balls at each other. Way to go, Team NYC! Check out some video below—the chaos ensues around the 1 minute mark. more ›

It's 90 Degrees!

It's 90 Degrees!

It's April 7 and it's freaking 90 degrees! That was the temperature measured at 1:45 p.m. in Central Park and WCBS 2 reports that its "forecasters believe the mercury could rise even a couple more degrees, shattering the 81-year-old record." (The 1929 record was 89 degrees.) In fact, WCBS 2 meteorologist John Elliott had fashion advice, "I want to make sure you have the right clothes, the right shoes, light colored. Don't forget the sunscreen and the water. Prepare as you would for a scorcher during mid-summer... The last time we hit 87 degrees was on August 21 of last year." more ›

Right now history is going down (one man's throat) at Fulton Ferry Landing, as champion eater Takeru Kobayashi attempts to break the world record in meatball eating. How many meatballs can one human eat in one minute? Until now that answer has been 26. Our man Tien Mao is on the scene and we'll update as soon as we hear where the new record stands, that is, if Kobayashi doesn't buckle under the pressure of television cameras (it's being filmed). more ›

NYPD To Begin Filming Interrogations

NYPD To Begin Filming Interrogations

In a move opposed by detectives unions but celebrated by those who accuse the NYPD of coercing confessions out of innocent people, the police department will soon begin videotaping interrogations. Supporters of the new policy—which will first be implemented as a pilot program at one high-crime precinct in the Bronx and one high-crime precinct in Brooklyn—say recording interrogations from start to finish will protect people from confessing to crimes they didn't commit. more ›

Ladies who looove tall guys, take note: 8-feet-1 Sultan Kosen from Turkey is in town and available! According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the 26-year-old is the world's tallest man. But though the towering Turk enjoys a commanding view of the world, he has no one to share it with; he tells the Daily News, "To this day, I haven't had a girlfriend because, with my height, they're generally frightened. But eventually that's one thing I really want to have—and she doesn't have to be as tall as me."

Jeter's Text Inbox Has a New Message From His Old Skip

Jeter's Text Inbox Has a New Message From His Old Skip

What's up with the Yankees and text messaging? We always hear of A-Rod texting: checking in with manager Joe Girardi, flirting with Madonna, and even LOLing with Pete Rose. But apparently his infield neighbor and new all-time record holder for most hits in club history, Derek Jeter, loves getting down with some T9 as well. After Jeter broke the big record Friday night, reporters naturally checked in with his old manager, Joe Torre. When asked if he had phoned to congratulate his former rookie phenom, Torre said, "I didn't call him...I texted him. That's his favorite thing. I've got to get into that young stuff." Much like all of Jeter's other longtime acquaintances, Torre went on to shower him with praise in abundance. He said, "He's a special kid. The person he is, to me, means a great deal. That's really something to be proud of, the respect he has for the game and his teammates. He's a leader but not that 'rah, rah.'...He doesn't have the power I know that George (Steinbrenner) likes to refer to as a Yankee. ... Just the tenacity, the determination. He's not afraid to win." more ›

City's Unemployment Rate Currently Highest Since 1997

City's Unemployment Rate Currently Highest Since 1997

The new jobless numbers from the State Labor Department are not too good, not too good at all. New York City's unemployment rate increased to 9.5 percent in June (the highest level since July 1997), while the rate outside of NYC climbed to 8.2 percent, the highest since June 1983. Last month the number of unemployed state residents jumped to 854,200, the greatest number ever on record. Low-five? And the state's overall unemployment rate soared to 8.7 percent in June, its highest level since October 1992, the same month that Sinéad O'Connor ripped up a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live. It wouldn't really be fair to blame all our problems on Sinéad this time, so let's just ramp up the class warfare and note that today also marked the announcement that JP Morgan's profits were up 36%, with second quarter earnings ballooning to $2.7 billion. Surely some of that largesse will be trickling down any day now! more ›
