The First Rainbow Of The Post-Hurricane Irene World

The First Rainbow Of The Post-Hurricane Irene World

It's been a long weekend, to put it mildly: Hurricane Irene bore down upon the city, and a patient kind of panic broke loose. Thankfully, the storm wasn't half as bad as expected, except for flooding, power outages, and no way to get to work tomorrow morning. Mayor Bloomberg was late for every press conference he scheduled, people played rugby in Times Square, and Grand Central was completely (and eerily) empty. A reporter got hit with raw sewage, some idiots went kayaking, and there were lots of hilarious Tweets. There's still a lot of cleaning up to come, but to end this long weekend, here's a rainbow over West Orange, with Manhattan and Newark in the distance. See you next weather disaster! more ›

Empire State Building Lights Up A Rainbow

Empire State Building Lights Up A Rainbow

[UPDATE BELOW] If you haven't noticed, the Empire State Building hasn't been able to make up its mind about what colors to be for the past few nights. But what does it mean? The Empire State Building's website is not much help, saying the colors should be "Private Lighting," which most likely means they were either testing the lights or a private party requested those colors. We've contacted the building to see what was up, but there are a few other possibilities. more ›

Double Rainbow Spotted Over Hudson River!

Double Rainbow Spotted Over Hudson River!

Evan Bindelglass of WCBS spotted a rainbow over the Hudson River yesterday, noting: "this is what I saw from Fort Lee, NJ. If you look closely, you can actually see a second rainbow in some of the photos." Which is a pretty unenthusiastic response compared to the now famous double rainbow reaction from Paul Vasquez (aka the Yosemitebear Mountain Giant). However, he does give us a reason to finally post that video (and after the jump, a parody featuring the KFC Double Down). more ›

Last Night's Rainbow Over New York

Raise your hand if you saw a rainbow after work last night! Seems a lot of people caught this one, which looks to have been in view from practically anywhere in the city (even on the Water Taxi ride to Red Hook). Although it didn't originate from the very essence of Julian Schnabel's soul this time around, they can't all be art stars. Here are some shots readers sent in from around town. more ›

Somewhere Over the Schnabel Rainbow

Somewhere Over the Schnabel Rainbow

A reader sent in this photo, taken Sunday evening, of which he says, "My friends and I debated whether it had in actuality landed on Julian Schnabel's apartment, or if it was simply radiating from the very core of his being thru an open window." Clearly it's the latter. That, or rainbows are like a Bat Signal for Schnabel and he was needed back at Chupi immediately regarding a buyer for the triplex penthouse. more ›

Rainbow Bonanza!

One upside to yesterday's torrential downpour: A few people captured photographs of rainbows around the city. Here's hoping anyone caught after today's rains see rainbows, too. more ›
