It's been a long time since one cast member on Saturday Night Live has grabbed almost all the attention focused on the show and Tina Fey technically isn't even a cast member right now. But for the third time in four weeks since the show returned, Fey was front and center in the opening sketch as the doppelganger she seems to refine and heighten a little every week, Sarah Palin.

Tomorrow night Tina Fey will be on the SNL set again doing her best Sarah Palin, but this time it won't be Amy Poehler by her side. TMZ is reporting that "Queen Latifah is getting in the middle of the Sarah Palin/Joe Biden VP debate by portraying last night's moderator, PBS journalist Gwen Ifill." Speaking of the debate, did you catch this Republican raise her hand for an Obama vote at the post-vice-presidential debate CNN focus group? SNL writers: work that in to tomorrow's show! Note: this weekend's host is Anne Hathaway, with musical group The Killers.
Due to the Writer's Guild of America strike, Hollywood's party, the Golden Globes Awards were transformed from a boozy, fun dinner party to a press conference where presenters from entertainment programs like Extra! and E! News got to announce the winners. Yes, it was as painful as it sounded (Giuliana Rancic, it's not about you); many said they couldn't believe they were announcing the winners but said they would prefer it with the stars. Inside Edition's Jim Moret struck a classy note when he acknowledged the Hollywood Foreign Association (the organization that doles out the Golden Globes) President Jorge Camara.

Don't get confused – today is Friday. Gothamist has been a bit under the weather, hence our little weekend movie preview showing up today rather than on its usual Thursday. And while we all anxiously count down the minutes until Monday's Golden Globes, there are a lot of great movie options available without even considering all the 2005 films hoping to take home a prize.
If you see a really hot, tall girl in a chauffeur's uniform around town, no, it's not your fantasy come to life, it's just DiCap's girlfriend, Gisele Bundchen, "acting" as a chauffeur in Taxi, some sort of comedy starring Queen Latifah as a cabdriver and Jimmy Fallon as an ambitious detective (wowee, what a spin on the interrcial buddy movie - a skinny pretty white boy and a beautiful rapper-turned-Oscar nominated black woman!). Gisele plays either a Brazilian thief or the head of a Brazilian smuggling operation - you know, something highly improbable. But Gothamist is praying for a long and drawn out fight scene, where Latifah shows Gisele who is Queen.
Steve Martin's novella, Shopgirl, will start filming in mid-October, with Martin playing Ray, Claire Danes as glove salesgirl Mirabelle, and Jason Schwartzman as her feckless but like-aged suitor, Jeremy. Originally Jimmy Fallon was mentioned as a possible candidate for the role of Jeremy, but may have had to drop out, due to his Saturday Night Live commitments as well as filming Taxi with Queen Latifah and Gisele Bundchen here in NY. In this case, Gothamist is pleased with the casting Schwartzman, because it means that Max Fischer meets Angela Chase. [Via Variety]
Oscar Commentary
Oscar is celebrating its 75th anniversary, I'm celebrating my 25th anniversary of watching Oscar.
News comes that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah will perform at the Oscars, but not Renee Zellweger. Apparently she declined, and, Ms. Zellweger, we thank you for that. She even admitted not wanting to sing - in a Guardian article, she said, "I was not going to sing for anybody besides my dogs when I'm in the shower, and then Rob Marshall comes along and that was it." Damn you, Rob Marshall! I like Renee a lot, but the "can't sing" thing is bugging me out. CZ-J and QL will be performing the only original song from Chicago, "I Move On," which the original Chicago musical creators, Fred Ebb and John Kander, wrote specifically for the film. Elvis Mitchell described Zellweger: "[her] float-like-a-butterfly voice doesn't triumph over her my-left-foot dance skills"
