The Tim Tebow trade hit yet another snag—though at least this time it won't warrant any intense prayer sessions. Because of a procedural issue, Tebow is required to sign a rewritten contract with the Denver Broncos on Friday and remain on Denver's salary cap until Saturday afternoon. This of course just gives him more time to plot his Jets ascendence: sources tell the Daily News that Tebow actually did push to come to NY over Jacksonville. And that's because he sees a clear path to resuming his career as a starter.
Duh: Tim Tebow Wants To Be The Jets Starting QB
Timsanity Begins: Are The Jets Ready For Tim Tebow?
Ultra-religious young quarterback/meme generator/metaphor Tim Tebow was supposed to have been traded from the Denver Broncos to the Jets yesterday around noon—but the lord giveth and the lord taketh, and due to "contract language," the trade was in jeopardy for much of the day. Repentant New Yorkers who initially balked the trade were left in limbo, forced to consider whether they really want Tebow—an undoubtedly polarizing figure who would change the entire makeup of the Jets offense, and possibly, culture—to come or not. All that's in the past now, because a deal was hammered out last night: Tebow is coming to NYC. But we're not sure if the Jets really are ready for Tebowmania: “We understand the popularity of any backup QB and this one is more unique than others,” GM Mike Tannenbaum said very understatedly.
Would It Be Terrible For The Jets To Trade For Tim Tebow?
Now that future Hall Of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning has agreed to terms with the Denver Broncos, the football world has focused its attention on where ultra-religious young quarterback/meme generator/metaphor Tim Tebow might end up. And according to multiple reports, the Jets have a sincere and "real" interest in trading for him. For current QB Mark Sanchez, the news that his team is STILL exploring their options even after they gave him a three-year extension must be sadder than when he learned "In The Heights" had closed.
Do The Jets Have Any Chance At Landing Peyton Manning?
There was a lot of lip-biting, a lot of man tears shed, and a whole heck of a lot of Manningface today at Peyton Manning's Indianapolis farewell press conference. And while most sportswriters agreed that it was an emotional and classy event, attention has now turned toward the future: where will one of the greatest quarterbacks of the last decade play next season? At least some Jets reportedly are chomping at the bit for him to come here: “I want him in New York. He needs to be a Jet,” one prominent Jets player told the News.
Bloomberg Fantasizes About Being Reincarnated As Quarterback
Sometimes with all the bad moods and boondoggles, it's hard to remember that Mayor Bloomberg is just a humble billionaire in Bermuda shorts like the rest of us. And he's got his own daydreams to help him while away the last days of his third term. With him running a temperature due to Giants Super Bowl fever, Bloomberg revealed one of those fantasies on his radio show this morning: he thinks about coming back to Earth in a second life as a quarterback, ala Warren Beatty in Heaven Can Wait. Well, it's certainly better than coming back as this guy.
Mark Sanchez: Doubters To The Left
Poor pretty boy Mark Sanchez. After a string of lucky wins followed by brutal losses, the Jets quarterback is facing the doubters, especially after coach Rex Ryan said he would bench him if needed. Yesterday, Sanchez said, "That’s always going to be Rex’s decision. It’s his prerogative. He says who the quarterback is. As long as it’s me, I’m playing my heart out for the team and I think the guys know that."
Mark Sanchez: Stud or Dork?
We all have our secrets: pickup gurus have their dating skills, In-N-Out Burger has their recipe, and Victoria's Secret has bedbug problems. So what is the secret Jets QB Mark Sanchez doesn't want anyone to know? He's a huge dork.
Mark Sanchez On His Okay First Start: "I Learned A Lot"
Brand new Jet Mark Sanchez, on the #5 draft pick this year, started his first NFL game last night—a preseason game against the Ravens— and the first moments were ugly. As the NY Times put it, "Early on, Sanchez played at a panic-inducing level. His first pass, short and wobbly after linebacker Ray Lewis knocked him backward, landed in the hands of defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, who rumbled 25 yards into the end zone for a 7-0 lead." (Of course, that was the very defense that Jets coach Rex Ryan helped create as the Raven's former defensive coordinator.) Golden Boy Sanchez did improve as the night went on, but the Jets' other quarterback, Kellen Clemens, did well enough in the 24-23 loss for Ryan to say there was still no decision on who the starting QB would be—the Daily News's QB-meter appears to give a teeny advantage to Sanchez. Sanchez summed up the night, "A great experience. Not the best start on Monday night, but I learned quite a bit."
New York Jets Receive Permission to Talk to Brett Favre
The drama of quarterback Brett Favre continues as ESPN reports the Jets have received permission to talk to him. Now, the Jets already have Chad Pennington, but one GM told the Daily News that Favre "would give the Jets legitimate hope." Not to mention a little pizazz. But Jets coach Eric Mangini said today he was "happy with the quarters we have." And fun: Deadspin titled its post, "Favre Might Ruin The Rest Of His Legacy As A New York Jet."
