The people at the Humane Society of the United States are still fighting the good fight against puppy mills, and today they—along with Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, D-Manhattan, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Friends of Finn members Amanda Hearst and Georgina Bloomberg—announced the introduction of a new bill (A.10150) in the New York legislature. The bill would strengthen standards of care for dogs in these large-scale, commercial breeding facilities, aka puppy mills. The HSUS reminds us why they're advocating for change:

NYC's Pet Store Pups Are Still Mostly From Puppy Mills
It's no secret that New York City's pet stores are often stocked with dogs that come from puppy mills, but now the HSUS is further uncovering the problem in their ongoing battle against stores that use the cruel suppliers. Following their report, put out just in time for puppy-buying season, NBC NY went undercover on their own, armed with the Humane Society of the United States' list of over 100 pet stores in New York believed to be procuring pups from the cruel mills.
Chinatown Meat Market Denies Selling Dog Meat (After Admitting It)
[UPDATE BELOW] A CBS affiliate in Minneapolis investigating the owner of an illegal puppy farm reports that at least 170 dogs were sold to a Chinatown meat market, which in turn sold them as food. Amazingly, a CBS reporter called up Dak Cheong and asked an employee if they sell dog meat. He said yes:
Can Canine Birth Certificates Cut Down On Puppy Mills?
Just in time for Christmas—the holiday that puts plenty of pups in present boxes—City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley is trying to cut down on puppy mills by pushing for "puppy birth certificates." The certificate would include breed, birthplace, and fur color, and the proposed bill would mandate that each dog have one (kind of like Pound Puppies!). Crowley explained at a press conference yesterday, "If you're going to bring a dog into your family, you should know where this dog is coming from."
Video: New PETA Ad Puts Dogs In Body Bags
PETA has a new commercial out, in which they ask: If you buy a dog, what will you do with the shelter dog you kill? Apparently the answer is that you'll carry it around in a body bag and have a grand ol' Weekend at Bernie's time with it. Which may or may not be what PETA does with its own animals.
