Jeremy Blake, an artist whose works have been shown at the Whitney and on Times Square's Jumbotron, is presumed to have killed himself by walking into the ocean at the Rockaways on Tuesday. On July 10, Blake discovered the body of his girlfriend, filmmaker Theresa Duncan, in their East Village apartment; he had planned to attend Duncan's memorial service, which is being held today.

Sandler Stars In First 9/11 Therapy Movie
Adam Sandler is showing his serious side again in "Reign Over Me" (named loosely after the Pete Townshend-penned song “Love, Reign O’er Me”). The film, also starring Don Cheadle, is the first to use the events of 9/11 as a plot device.

We were walking around the Upper West Side when we noticed that part of West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue had been cordoned off by a film or TV production. Was it more Bruce-and-Halle filming? Or August Rush? Or Dedication? Or a Law & Order? But actually it was Reign O'er Me. Gothamist wracked our brain, because the name had sounded familiar... and then we found a production letter: It's the September 11-related movie with Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle. Oh, boy. On IMDB, it's called Empty City, and the description is this:
A man (Sandler) who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate (Cheadle). Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief.Cheadle plays a psychiatrist, and last we read, Jada Pinkett Smith was going to play his wife, with Liv Tyler playing another psychiatrist and Saffron Burrows playing playing a patient of Cheadle's character who has "entanglements with both" men. Hmm! Now, the film is written and directed by Mike Binder, who we're predisposed to dislike because we hated his baby, The Mind of the Married Man, aka, an HBO show almost as bad as Arli$$. But The Upside of Anger wasn't that bad, so we're hopeful, as we do like Sandler (hey, he was great in Punch Drunk Love) and love Cheadle. And Sandler said on his website that this would be a "serious movie."
Some Of 'Rent' Will Be Filmed In NYC; Quality Not Assured
From Revolution Studios, the studio producing Rent, the studio behind classics like Tomcats, the Master of Disguise, and and the upcoming Christmas with the Kranks whose previews make our teeth hurt, a letter to Gothamist about the movie version of Rent being filmed in San Francisco's manmade island:
We saw your recent story on the Gothamist website about the film version of Rent, and we wanted to take the opportunity to clarify a few points that were made.
While you state that Rent is to be filmed in San Francisco, in fact all exterior shots for the film are to be filmed in New York City. The Treasure Island location in San Francisco is where the soundstages and interior sets are to be located.

Movies at Alice Tully Hall Alice Tully Hall is where many New York Film Festival films are screened, and for the first year, where New Directors/New Films is taking place. My fondness of Alice Tully Hall also stems from the fact that by now, I know the optimal seats for movie viewing as well as talk participation.
