Prospect Park Baboons Get Named

Last month Brooklyn got two new baby baboons, but they've been nameless until now. We're told the duo was just dubbed Azizi and Jabari, names that pay homage to their ancestry. The Egyptian names mean "brave" and "precious," and were chosen from at least a thousand suggestions that were submitted to the Prospect Park Zoo, where they live. You can visit them daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the zoo's director even says they recognize their names now! more ›

The two male babies are the first baboon births at the zoo in six years, and were officially announced by the Wildlife Conservation Society this morning. Bronx Zoo baby lion cubs, watch your backs, Prospect Park Zoo is now unveiling their baby baby doll sheep! The 11-month-old duo will make their debut at the Annual Wildlife Conservation Society’s Fleece Festival, coming up on May 8th and 9th, where we're told the sheep and their alpaca friends will lose their thick wool coats to help them stay cool this summer. Yesterday (just in time for Easter!) the Prospect Park Zoo alerted potential visitors that their 3-year-old Flemish giant rabbit—Herbie, who weights in at 18 lbs—is available for petting! They note: "zoo-goers can greet Herbie and touch other animals at the Live Animal Encounters program held every Saturday and Sunday at 12:30, 1:00, 2:30, 3:00 p.m." Surprisingly, this big guy is a full 10 lbs lighter than some others of his kind! more ›

Red Panda Is New Addition to Prospect Park Zoo

No, he's not blushing from all the attention. Mao Mi is a Red Panda and the newest addition to Prospect Park Zoo in Brooklyn. He arrived last week from Michigan's Binder Park Zoo as part of a Wildlife Conservation Society breeding project. Red Pandas are an endangered species with fewer than 2,500 adults thought to remain in the wild in Bhutan, China, India, Laos, Nepal and Burma. more ›
