Reminder: People Still Make More In The Private Sector

After the recession, city Comptroller John Liu claimed that people began thinking of those in the public sectors as the "new fat cats," and wanted to set the record straight. So in a new report (below), the office reminds everyone that city workers get paid on average 17 percent less than their counterparts in the private, for-profit sector. “These findings about municipal salaries are an important foundation for any discussion about public employee pensions,” Liu said in a statement. “The issue of retirement needs to be looked at in the context of the overall compensation package earned by public employees." Port Authority, Private Company To Build New Goethals Bridge

The Port Authority has been spending the largest percentage of its budget working on the World Trade Center [pdf], so they're calling in a private-sector company to help build an entirely new Goethals Bridge. The bridge currently connects Staten Island to New Jersey over Arthur Kill, and new plans would widen it to six 12-foot-wide lanes and include a 10-foot-wide pedestrian and bike walkway. The Port Authority would have to pay back the winning company the estimated $1 billion over the next 30 years, but they would continue to collect tolls on the bridge. "We are buying a bridge, paying for it over a period of time and getting a guaranteed warranty on it," PA spokesman Steve Coleman said. Bratton Leaving LAPD to Return to NYC

Former NYC Police Chief William Bratton announced yesterday that he will step down from his current post running the LAPD and return to New York to work in the private sector. Bratton has been chief of police in Los Angeles since 2002 and spoke of his tenure with a sense of "mission accomplished" yesterday, telling reporters, "We succeeded in making this city one of the safest in America." more ›
