An 8-months-pregnant teacher's aide was shot while sitting inside her car in Springfield Gardens yesterday. Leba Toussaint was talking to a friend who had recently gotten out of prison, and was shot in the shoulder by someone firing from a passing green Acura. Her father believes the bullet was intended for her friend, though he was unharmed in the shooting. He told the Daily News, "She's going to be okay. They have to be careful with anything they do because she's pregnant." Police couldn't confirm that the ex-con was the intended target of the shooting.

EMT Accused of Ignoring Dying Woman Sought Anonymity
After allegedly responding to an Au Bon Pain employee's pleas to help a dying coworker with, "We're on our break, so there's nothing we can do," an EMT placed a call to her dispatcher to report a woman with "difficulty breathing." But according to a source who's heard a recording of the call, EMT Melisa Jackson was more concerned with covering her ass than getting help for pregnant 25-year-old Eutisha Revee Rennix. "Don't put my name in it!" Jackson allegedly told the dispatcher.
Before Killing Pregnant Pedestrian, Driver Was Drinking
Though his lawyer argues that a "vehicular malfunction" caused the crash that killed a pregnant woman on a midtown sidewalk in March, the van's driver admitted to police that he was drinking before the horrible accident. Keston Brown, 28, first told cops he'd only consumed two Bud Lights before getting behind the wheel, but six hours later he admitted to imbibing more than double that amount at an Upper West Side bar: "We stayed 30 to 40 minutes. I had about three or four bottles of Bud Light and one shot of Hennessey." But Brown maintains that he wasn't drunk, and that the van mysteriously "turned off" before he careened onto the sidewalk and killed Ysemny Ramos, who was two months pregnant. Police sources say that moments before the crash, Brown and his coworker in the passenger seat had been driving alongside Ramos and her friend, "shouting come-ons at the two women from his window before losing control of the delivery van." Yesterday Brown pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide, manslaughter and assault charges, but a Supreme Court judge refused to lower his bail.
After Attacking Pregnant Woman, Pit Bull Killed by Cop
A stray pit bull attacked a pregnant woman yesterday morning as she sold newspapers beneath an elevated subway station in the Bronx. According to the Post, the wild dog lunged at 32-year-old Nogotaly Meite, an immigrant from the Ivory Coast, around 8:30 a.m., sinking its teeth into her left ankle. Her cries of "Help me! Help me!" were heard by good Samaritan Johnny Hernandez, who tells 1010 WINS that he "put the dog on the ground and put my knee on his neck...I repeatedly punched it in the snout...at which point it released." Apparently, it then attacked and bit the left hand of NYPD Transit Officer Mike Stone, who shot the dog dead. Meite was taken to the hospital and given stitches; the Times notes that the incident "left the sidewalk on East Tremont Avenue stained with a four-foot trail of blood, leaves and newspapers."
