You'll recall that during his first mayoral campaign, a New York magazine reporter asked Mike Bloomberg if he'd ever smoked grass, to which the future plutocrat replied, "You bet I did. And I enjoyed it." And since taking office, he's also enjoyed locking up New Yorkers (most of them minorities) for low-level marijuana possession. During his administration, the NYPD has made more than 350,000 misdemeanor pot arrests—more than Dinkins, Koch, and Giuliani combined. Last year this folly cost NYC an estimated $75 million dollars, according to a report by the Drug Policy Alliance (below).

Grandma Upset After Wilson Chandler's Pot Arrest
After Knicks forward Wilson Chandler was arrested for pot possession while driving in Queens, the Daily News asked his 76-year-old grandmother for a comment—and they sure got one: "I don't know about pot in his car. I ain't heard nothing from him yet. I didn't raise him to smoke pot." Chandler was pulled over because his headlights weren't on at 11:30 p.m. The car "smelled more like a Grateful Dead concert than a Knick game" and he and passenger Lamonte Yarbrough admitted to smoking pot. Police found bags of marijuana in the car's center console and in the trunk. The pair are due in court July 1; the Knicks said, "We have spoken to Wilson regarding last night’s incident and will not be commenting at this time."
Pot Possession Charge For Knicks' Wilson Chandler
Last night wasn't very good for the Knicks. Not only did they miss out on the draft lottery, their forward Wilson Chandler was charged with pot possession. According to the Post, "Chandler, who turned 23 last week, was carrying what was described as a 'small amount' of marijuana when cops pulled over the 2010 Mercedes-Benz he was riding in near 94th Avenue and 213th Street in Queens at 11:30 p.m., police said. Cops decided to search Chandler after they smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, police said. Chandler was issued a desk appearance ticket for the misdemeanor charge." Chandler is scheduled for sports hernia surgery—medical marijuana anyone?
Jets Team Captain Charged with Pot Possession
Shaun Ellis, a Jets defensive end, was stopped by police in NJ last weekend and eventually charged with "possession of marijuana, driving without insurance and speeding after a highway traffic stop." Ellis was stopped because he, as the Daily Record reports, "allegedly approached a police car from behind at high speed on Route 287 south, pulled even and briefly slowed down, then passed the police car and exited onto Route 24." When the cop pulled him over, Ellis was "uncooperative" and eventually some pot was found in the car. Ellis, who is expected to play on Sunday, issued a statement, "I apologize to my family, the fans and the organization. As a captain, I set a poor example for my teammates as well as all NFL players. Although this is a pending legal matter, I understand that I have to be responsible for my actions." Well, it's not shooting yourself in the leg, is it?
Arrests Made in Off-Duty Cop Shooting
After the shooting of an off-duty rookie cop on Staten Island, the police arrested two suspects, but are still looking for a third. Police believe that up three armed men surrounded Police Officer Damion Lawrence, his brother and a friend in their car in Port Richmond. Lawrence was shot twice in the leg and his gun was also stolen. Lawrence underwent surgery and is expected to recover--but the hospital found he was carrying 1/8 ounce. Internal Affairs is also investigating; the Daily News points out that a $25 bag would only get a civilian a summons.
