Off-Duty Cop Was Designated Driver in Fatal Crash

Off-Duty Cop Was Designated Driver in Fatal Crash

According to one survivor, NYPD Officer Hoyoung Kim was supposed to have been the designated driver, but was "slightly intoxicated" when he crashed on the Bronx River Parkway on Saturday, killing himself and another off-duty cop and injuring four passengers. Police say blood alcohol tests have not been completed, but are blaming the crash on "driver inattentiveness," saying Kim wasn't paying attention and realized he was about to pass his exit. more ›

Paterson Pension Veto Draws the Ire of Cops, Firefighters

Governor Paterson hasn't winning any popularity contests in quite some time—maybe that's why he's played hardball yesterday, "stunning" people with his veto of the routine pension measure for police officers and firefighters that has been in place for almost thirty years. The plan allows newly hired employees to retire after 20 years at half salary. more ›

Report: TSA To Take Over Subway Bag Check From NYPD

Report: TSA To Take Over Subway Bag Check From NYPD

The city's overall budget cuts are apparently hitting the NYPD right in the subway bag check area. MyFoxNY reports that with few police officers available, "Transportation Security Administration bag screeners from Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty airports will be replacing most NYPD cops in the subway that screen bags for explosives." The TSA wouldn't confirm the plan (but did say taking TSA screeners from airports and putting them underground wouldn't effect air safety) and the NYPD says these are just talks. However, sources tell MyFoxNY it's likely to happen—and it'll work this way: "About 30 TSA screeners a day will be pulled from the three area airports Monday through Friday to inspect bags at various subway locations throughout the city. At each location they'll be teamed up with one police officer instead of the two or three officers you currently see at inspection sites." Naturally, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association says this is a terrible idea and says budget crisis or no, the NYPD needs more cops. more ›

Queens Shooting: Rev. Al Sharpton Announces Fifth Avenue Protest March For Tomorrow

Queens Shooting: Rev. Al Sharpton Announces Fifth Avenue Protest March For Tomorrow

The Reverend Al Sharpton announced the "shopping for justice" protest march he's been talking about since the shooting of Sean Bell, Joseph Guzman, and Trent Benefield by the police.

"Many will be shopping for trinkets and toys. We will be shopping for justice and making a moral appeal to this city and this nation. The fact that we are going on probably the most visible street in the world tomorrow, you don't have to talk to be heard. You just got to show up."
The silent protest march will take place tomorrow starting at noon, with marchers meeting at Fifth Avenue and 59th Street. That's a quite a statement, two weekends before Christmas. A wheelchair-bound Benefield, as well as Bell's fiancee Nicole Paultre and four year old daughter, and Abner Louima are expected to march. And since teachers union head Randi Weingarten was at the press conference today, we expect she'll be there, too. more ›
