Actor Roy Scheider died yesterday at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, after battling multiple myeloma for several years and suffering complications from a staph infection. He was 75 and had been living in Sag Harbor, New York (after moving out his house in Sagaponack that Billy Joel purchased).

Just in time for the holidays - and holiday presents - the Ninja Burglar has returned! The nefarious nighttime nuisance that had Staten Island residents on their toes after hitting sixteen homes (some with homeowners in them) robbed two homes in the Todt Hill neighborhood over the weekend. The Advance reported that the "elusive serial bandit" first robbed a mansion on Louisa Lane. He entered through a second floor terrace door - while the...

A man was shot after he stabbed two people on a Midtown street. Either an off-duty police officer or plainclothes law enforcement officer is believed to have shot the man. Here's a tip we received:

I walked outside my building about an hour ago and saw tons of police activity. From what I hear a man went into Starbucks to obtain a knife unsuccessfully. Then went into another restaurant (not sure of the name) and obtained a knife. He proceeded to stab two people in between 34th & 35th St on 2nd ave. An off-duty police officer was present and shot the attacker.
It's unclear if the attacker is dead - he and the two victims were taken to Bellevue, where they are in surgery.

Wayne and Dianne Guay, whose bodies and car were found on Monday after being missing for days during what should have been a half-day trip from South Carolina to Queens, died from drowning. The determination of death now raises questions about how authorities handled reacting to a 911 call from a motorist who noticed a car accident off a North Carolina stretch of 1-95 last Thursday. Authorities say that the caller misidentified where the accident occurred by a mile or two, so when the firefighters and EMS went to the scene, they didn't see anything and left after looking for 22 minutes.

Uhm, really? According to Police Chief Michael Collins "officers took prudent steps to handle what may have been a dangerous situation" on Thursday when eight officers jumped and arrested a balloon artist as he pulled his bike up to his normal place of business outside of the Central Park Zoo. His crime? Leaving an $850 rainbow striped electric air pump behind in a Starbucks. The cops said it looked like a bomb.

The Daily News also helpfully points out the largest bank note that was ever in circulation was the $100,000 bill with President Woodrow Wilson's image. It's no longer in circulation, so don't go trying that one. Gothamist remembers a fairly recent (past few years) incident where some people who worked at Columbia University's copy center used the photocopiers to make counterfeit money. Or are we just our delusional selves?

The U.S. House of Representatives Canon House Building was evcacuated when Capitol Hill security noticed the outline of a gun on the X-ray machine's monitors. SWAT teams were brought into to secure the area as well as find two suspects, a man and a woman. A little less than two hours later, Representative John Shimkus of Illinois called the police to tell them that the suspects they were looking for were two female staffers with Halloween costumes that included toy guns; SWAT teams were "disgusted." Capitol Hill Police Chief Gainer said, "I don't think anybody was trying to trick anybody. I think it was just an unusual set of Halloween circumstances that unfolded on us." Yes, an ill-planned Mischief Night during the day at the Capitol.

An ethics committee in Maryland ruled that Police Chief Charles A. Moose cannot profit from the proceeds of a book deal he made. The committe stated, "Accepting remuneration for services directly and immediately related to an employee's governmental activities violates the prestige-of-office prohibition because, to paraphrase the state ethics commission, those services `go with the job.'"

This is Chief Moose, Montgomery County Police Chief.
