Bloomberg To Unveil "Vision 2020" Waterfront Project Tomorrow

Mayor Bloomberg may be short in stature, but he's held in quite high regard in certain circles: he's been hailed as a visionary for programs such as PlaNYC2030, and "innovative" for his implementation of bike-lanes throughout the city. "In many ways he's the only mayor who's really thought long-term. He may be looking forward in directions that people aren't particularly happy about, but he's looking forward," said Doug Muzzio, a professor at CUNY and a frequent Bloomberg critic. And tomorrow, we'll all be graced with our visionary leader's next great step into the beyond! more ›

Bloomberg Announces New Website For Stupid Bold Ideas

Bloomberg Announces New Website For <strike>Stupid</strike> Bold Ideas

In his State of the City speech this week, Mayor Bloomberg mentioned the new program "Give A Minute," a sort of 311 for big, bold ideas about how to improve the city and, in particular, make neighborhoods greener. The program, which is due to launch online later this spring, is part of PlaNYC2030, giving residents the chance to think outside the box and improve the "public dialogue." And judging from the results from the first two cities to try it out, Memphis and Chicago, good ideas are flowing like William Shatner's rhymes on the confusingly interactive website: some suggestions so far include "lots of hot dogs," "remove the street sign," and "would like to develop my ability to drink three margaritas at lunch, every day." What ideas are you excited to suggest? more ›

City Gets Mapped By <em>Lasers</em>

City Gets Mapped By Lasers

Over the weekend, the low-flying, scary sounding "Shrike Commander" plane was busy collecting images for what will be the most detailed map of New York City ever. The images are collected by a sonar-like laser system, which shoots out laser pulses from the aircraft and measures how long it takes for the pulses to return. The data will be compiled into a comprehensive map and used to assess everything from flood prone areas to neighborhoods in need of more trees. They couldn't just use GoogleMaps? more ›

Mayor Offers Progress Report On Green Initiatives

Mayor Offers Progress Report On Green Initiatives

Mayor Bloomberg will be in Times Square today, to celebrate Earth Day (which is 40 years old) with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, City Council Quinn, and others, including a virtual Vice President Al Gore. Which makes it perfect timing to look back at Earth Day 2007, when the mayor announced PlaNYC 2030, his list of 127 initiatives for the city to achieve sustainability by the year 2030. (Hey, the Mayor's Office Tweeted this morning, "Welcome to NYC, where every day is Earth Day.") And, for what it's worth, that 2007 speech is also the one where he broached the topic of...congestion pricing. more ›

Growing and Greening in New York

The Museum of the City of New York unveiled their Growing and Greening New York exhibit last month (running through Earth Day on April 22nd), which they collaborated on with PlaNYC and the Future of the City. Together their installation and program series "dissect the latest projects, innovations, and environmental initiatives that are shaping the future of New York City." Some panel discussions will focus on the rebirth of the South Bronx, the legislation and design of indoor bike parking in New York (no more icicles on your bicycles!), the lessons of ambitious "eco-cities" around the globe, and meeting LEED Platinum specifications. more ›
