South Street Seaport Is Now One Step Closer to Redesign

South Street Seaport Is Now One Step Closer to Redesign

The South Street Seaport got one step closer to getting a shiny new facelift when plans for a Pier 17 redesign were praised by members of the Landmarks Preservation Commission at a hearing yesterday. SHoP Architects' design for the new pier, which was well received by Community Board 1 last month, replaces the currently quite drab South Street Seaport Mall with a modern glass building topped by a rooftop lawn and a 600-700 seat concert hall, which would double as an open-air bandshell in the summer. more ›

South Street Seaport Pier Could Go Glass, Get Concert Hall

South Street Seaport Pier Could Go Glass, Get Concert Hall

South Street Seaport's Pier 17 has never quite clicked since it opened in 1985. Malls in Manhattan don't exactly have the best track record (besides the outdoor mall that is SoHo), and the Pier has had a hard time getting quality tenants to stick around over the years. So now the owner of the pier wants to gut the whole the thing and replace it with a glass box with a giant lawn and concert hall on top. more ›

Flashback: Music Fans Crowd The South Street Seaport, Circa 1973

Sometime around 1973, concerts started taking place at the South Street Seaport at what looks like Pier 17 (which still houses concerts today). The caption on this photo—which was taken in June of 1973—reads, "Folk singing and dancing has found a new home at the South Street Seaport on the East River near Brooklyn Bridge. Enthusiastic crowds gather several times a week during the summer to enjoy the show and the music, view the harbor boats, and breathe the sea air." more ›

Seaport Ice Ready for Skates

Seaport Ice Ready for Skates

South Street Seaport may be amidst some redevelopment confusion, but at least their ice rink is finally open to the public! Housed on Pier 17, Seaport Ice should remain open til sometime in March depending on the weather (admission is 5 bucks, with an extra 7 if you're renting). It will welcome your skates seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on top of that, there's even a 3,500 square-foot tented warming area that includes a snack bar. The best part is still yet to come, however, we hear that the Seaport Music Festival folks will be bringing bands to the rink! more ›

Should Public Drinking Be Allowed?

Should Public Drinking Be Allowed?

Drinking in New York has long been reserved for private homes or establishments with liquor licenses (or speakeasys!), but how well is the law enforced when it comes to drinking on a stoop or in a public park? Apparently, and unfortunately, the law is still being upheld very well. A few years back the tabloids wondered why cops looked the other way when it came to Chardonnay swilling audiences listening to the symphony in Central Park, while the beer-drinking crowd at a 9/11 memorial in Rockaway incurred plenty of fines. more ›

Spiegelworld Returns to Pier 17 Later This Summer

Spiegelworld Returns to Pier 17 Later This Summer

Spiegelworld returns to Pier 17 this summer...but not until August! Their lineup is a hefty one, however, running through November 2nd. The 100+ year old traveling venue became a seasonal fixture in New York three years ago. Holding 350 people, the shows are pretty intimate, and the views from the garden are on par with the beauty of the tent itself. And this year there will even be a perfect night view of the Brooklyn Bridge waterfall. more ›
