EVENT: We're sponsoring, and our publisher is hosting, the NYC Photobloggers event tonight. Come over to the Apple Store to see a dazzling display of digital images and the faces behind the photos: Eliot Shepard, Jay Parkinson (yes, that Jay Parkinson) and a whole lot more will be on hand. There will also be a special presentation by Jen Bekman of 20x200, Hey Hot Shot, and the Jen Bekman Gallery and an after party at Merc Bar.

Gothamist is sponsoring New York City Photobloggers 9 tonight @ 6:30PM at the Apple Store SoHo-- there will be six great presentations by local photobloggers, a giveaway by Photojojo, and some free beers afterwards. If you like photography, it'll be a good time.
EVENT: NYC Photobloggers will take over the Apple Store again tonight, for the 7th of their events there. The A-list...um, list, of past photographers is a long one. Six more will join the ranks tonight, as they are the centerpieces for this event. They are:
Did SNL's Bill Hader get some free gear?
Thanks so much to everyone who came out for the Gothamist-sponsored New York City Photobloggers 6 event last night at the Apple Store! We had an overflow crowd come and listen to some of the best photobloggers in the city-- six great presentations on technical issues (camera choice, image processing, site-building) and subjects (street-photography, portraits, abstracts, architecture...) We also gave away a tons of prints, and a copy of Aperture, the new process-app from Apple (congrats, Red!) Afterwards, we all hit a packed Merc Bar for some free beer-- yum! If you missed it, come to the next one in May, or check out all that's going on in our photoblogger community at the NYCPB site.
If you love photography, there's only one place you should be tonight: the Apple Store SoHo from 5:30-8pm. The NYC Photobloggers group is throwing their sixth event-- a fun filled spectacular kicking off with a demo of Aperture at 5:30pm, and followed by presentations by six of NYC's best photobloggers at 6:30pm: Corrie and Lex of officersrow.org, Joseph Holmes of Joe's NYC, Noah Kalian of Noah Kalina Interiors, Tod Seelie of Of Quiet, Jimmie Yoo of cornershots.com, and Reza Mazaheri of Photos by Reza Mazaheri. The Apple Store was nice enough to donate a copy of Aperture ($500 value!) and many of the photographers are raffling prints, so if you swing by, you might get a present! Cost: absolutely free. Bonus: Gothamist is sponsoring free beer after the show at a local bar as part of our 3rd Birthday week. See you there!
If you enjoyed yesterday's post about night photography, check out Peering into Darkness, a new photoblog that we've been digging. There's 30+ great night shots in his archives-- including the spooky picture from Williamsburg, above. [Related: the New York City Photobloggers have announced the lineup for their 6th Apple Store Event on February 10th. Some great pblogs are representing!]
Gothamist decided to do a little bridge information digging after reading the New Yorker's Talk of the Town piece about how the Willis Avenue Bridge would be dismantled and is essentially for sale (but it's getting replaced - don't worry) and we came across this cool Department of Transportation Bridge Reconstruction Projects website. There are a bunch of projects on the list ("Rehabilitation of the 17th Avenue Bridge, Bensonhurst, Brooklyn," "Grand Concourse Reconstruction," "Rehabilitation of the Gun Hill Road Bridge over Metro-North Railroad") and some interesting diagrams and renderings. The Willis Avenue Bridge, aka the Third Avenue Bridge, project has taken a couple years and over $100 million, and as the New Yorker article stated, the new replacement bridge will be put beside it and the dismantling of the old, 105 year old bridge will occur in 2007. Photobloggers, pencil that into your calendars.
The NYC Photobloggers are out in full effect this week documenting the changing foliage. Our favorite images come from Rion's set today, but 114th, Heather Champ, and Quarlo also have some beauties. And for more, Flickr's "leaves" tag has been giving us a whole heap of pretty. Check it out.
The New York City Photobloggers are opening their first gallery show tonight at the Chrystie Street Gallery (167 Chrystie, between Rivington and Kenmare). Word to the wise: bring sunglasses, because there's going to be a lot of crazed photobloggers running around with giant flashes. Some of our favorite photobloggers are in the show, including Eliot Shepard, Rion Nakaya, David Gallagher, and Joe Holmes (disclosure: one of us has a couple of prints in the show).
Apparently rents in SoHo have gotten so high that even the big brands can only afford to open stores for a month! First there was Galleria Illy, the coffee house sponsored by the Italian coffee company, open on West Broadway off Broome since September (it closes on December 15). Now Kodak is breezing into the neighborhood for November-- their Kodak One Gallery will be open at the corner of Wooster and Spring from November 1st to the 27th. From the looks of that nifty computer drawing above, they've got a neat space laid out (although it's a little spooky that all the sales guys are wearing the same uniform!) Best of all, for $25 they'll scan 250 of your prints to their Kodak Easyshare gallery, which is a pretty good price, especially if you don't need lab-quality scanning. They're also going to offer a bunch of Digital Photography lectures and one-hour courses-- perfect if you're tired of hitting the Apple Store for your SoHo brand-centric "education". Our pick:
- Luckily no one was seriously hurt when a school bus toppled over on the Major Deegan Expressway; authorties say that the kids' seatbelts might have saved them - check out this picture from Newsday
Looking for something to do this Friday? Well, why not start off the night with some photoblogs! Friday evening at 7 is the 4th installment of the ever popular New York City Photobloggers talk at the Apple Store. The evening's speakers are Jenene Chesbrough, Raul Gutierrez, Nontajit "Go" Lertworachon, Jay Parkinson (aka Gothamist Health), Travis Ruse, Eliot Shepard, and Keith Kin Yan.

- And presentations from Flickr and Fotolog.
Extra special reminder: don't miss tonight's Gothamist-Six Apart happy hour at Sweet and Vicious (5 Spring Street, off Bowery), beginning around 7pm. It's right across the street from the opening of Eliot Shepard's show at Jen Bekman's gallery- that starts at 6pm, so you might want to go there first. Our happy hour will feature free drinks (hint: until the money runs out!) and extra special giveaways and surprise guests. Afterwards, some of us are going to go look at the elephants arriving in Manhattan- hilarity is sure to ensue.
All is well at Gothamist HQ. As some of you may have noticed, we have been hard at work launching Austinist- check it out for some great SXSW music coverage today! We also have a couple of other announcements this week:
The Gates delivered this past weekend: Rave reviews (well, as rave as you're gonna get in this town - here's one semi-pan from Newsday) from all corners (Post, Daily News, NY Times). And, happily, business is brisk for most everyone, from hot dog vendors to hotels, just as the city had hoped. However, there may be some casualties in the wonder that are The Gates: Photobloggers, who have been trying to top themselves with new and interesting ways of capturing 7500+ gates. Here's a partial list of blogs with photographs, and here the Flickr tags: gates, thegates, christo, centralpark.
Photobloggers hit Grand Central Terminal for another protest against the MTA's proposed ban on photography in subways. For more information on the ban, read our previous post on the matter. And if you want to let the MTA know how you feel, go here.
The Paul Shambroom + Photobloggers event is tonight at 6:30 at the Apple Store in SoHo. It should be a lot of fun: Shambroom talking about his very cool Meetings series, and the photobloggers talking about shooting at the RNC protests. Afterwards, there is an open bar at the Merc Bar! So, if you like artists, politics, or free drinks, this might be the event for you! See you tonight!
As if the huge banner at the top of this page wasn't enough of a clue... Gothamist wants to make sure everyone comes out to the Apple Store tonight for NYC Photobloggers 2. The event is from 6-8PM, which will give you plenty of time to get home for the debate at 9PM.
Tomorrow night NYC Photobloggers take over Soho's Apple Store. Again. It's been about 7 months since their last gathering so come check out what's new at this next live photography exhibit. If you missed the last one, check out the hightlights here.
Hello, everybody. We've had a couple of exciting months, launching SFist and DCist as well as growing our staff, and have a busy fall/winter planned as well:
Photobloggers are Gothamist's eyes on the street- so for the next four days, we're going to feature a wrapup of all the RNC photoblog posts we can find. If you want to send us a link, leave it in the comments or email Jake. Today's amazing photography from the march: Joe Holmes, Citying, more Citying, Erin's pix at fshk, and Buzznet's NoRNC. Good shots of the dragon burning at IndyMedia. And since we didn't do a roundup on Day Minus 1, check out the pictures from yesterday from Rion, MeccaPixel, Callalillie, and Youngna. Oooh- we almost missed some nice shots by KDunk, NYCAC, and Red. Dozens of shots from Angryfinger. Last update for Day 0 @ 12:19am EST: Meccapixel from Sunday's rally, WhatISee (a number of posts), GL331, more Buzznet, Estren, great pix from Matt Law, and some Flickr coverage! Ok, we lied. Just a few more: Jason Kottke hits the streets, and Rion continues her great work. And Jesse Chan Norris sent in this great late edition.
Gothamist is pleased to announce the addition of four great New York City photoblogs to our list of links- Metroplus, RedElphBear, Lackadaisical, and Overshadowed (where we got the picture above). Gothamist is also organizing our second NYC Photobloggers event at the Apple Store in SoHo, tentatively set for Thursday, September 30th, 2004. If you would like to participate, help organize, or sponsor the event, shoot us an email.

It was a great night at the SoHo Apple Store last night, with the NYC Photobloggers Exhibition. Not only did we get to see the photographs of clarsen, slower, Bluejake, Laura Holder (above), Infrangible, rion.nu, Satan's Laundromat, 990000, and lightningfield, we also got to more about their respective starts, processes, and favorite subjects - a nice sampling of different outlooks on photoblogging. Additionally, Anil spoke about Six Apart's Typepad (and demonstrated its moblog potential by creating one of the evening) and Adam and Scott explained the beauty of fotolog.net and its community building aspects. Thanks, photobloggers and friends!
Stop by the Apple Store in SoHo tonight at 6PM for an Evening of NYC Photobloggers. Seven NYC photobloggers will be showing their photographs and speaking about their work. Ask rion how she picks what kinds of bulidings appear on the site's little design elements. Ask Eliot why his site works the way it does. Ask Jake why he has one camera devoted to Thompson. We hope to see you there tonight. If you arrive early, there may be some cookies for you as well.
Gothamist loved this photograph from Rion Nakaya's rion.nu because it reminded us of one of our favorite films, but there are other fabulous photographs to be found on the site. Rion and other photobloggers will be speaking at the New York City Photobloggers Exhibition, on Thursday, February 26, SoHo Apple Store.
