As if we needed any further proof that beer gardens are so hot right now, along comes another one. Local West, the cafe and cocktails joint at One Penn Plaza next to MSG, is adding its own 6,000-square-foot beer garden into the fray early next month.

Moynihan Station Area Might Look Like This
The Friends of Moynihan Station shared a rendering of what Moynihan Station will look like, according to NY State. According to FMS, the Empire State Development Corporation has been "reluctant" to share them, but FMS thinks "looks great," though there's a lot that needs to be explained.
Latest Details on Moynihan/Penn Station Project
The state released the draft scope for the Moynihan Station project today, and while the details have yet to be finalized, The New York Sun outlines the document's major components. Madison Square Garden will be moved into the rear of the Farley Post Office Building, which will be renamed Moynihan Station. A remade Penn Station will be renamed Moynihan East and will feature a sky-lit train hall surrounded by a million square feet of retail space.
Keep an Eagle Eye Out for Penn Station Eagles
From 1910 until 1963, when New York actually had a Pennsylvania Station instead of a dingy 1960s subterranean rat warren beneath a hockey rink and office towers, twenty-two stone eagles stood guard over the McKim, Mead, and White masterpiece. The eagles themselves, along with almost all the other stone artwork on the station were the work of artist Adolph A. Weinman, who among other things created Civic Fame atop the Municipal Building and the Walking Liberty half dollar coin.
Pencil This In
MOVIE: By now you've probably seen Grizzly Man. The Werner Herzog directed documentary depicts one (slightly off kilter) man's relationship with nature. Over the course of 13 summers, Timothy Treadwell lived amongst the animals - most notably the bears, in the Alaskan wild. You know this doesn't end well.
Bloomberg Goes After the Democrats
- Tour of city's waterwaysThe Observer notes that DNC is debating whether or not to have a heartland convention or just go to NYC, where most everyone wants to go anyway. New Orleans is the "sentimental choice" for the convention, but it's unclear whether they'll be bidding; the other cities who have bid for the convention are Minneapolis and Denver, cities that haven't seen a Democratic convention in about 100 years. NYC hosted the 1992 convention, aka the start of Biill Clinton's era, so there might be some symmetry if Hillary does decide to run.
$1,000 Rentals and Phantoms
Thinking of all the college grads who just busted their asses looking for reasonably priced rentals in the city, the NY Times looked at one-bedroom rentals in the $1,000 range. The perhaps-catch: None were in Manhattan, but that may be due to the fact that many Manhattan deals "often change hands by word of mouth." Quite a few of the apartments sounded nice, but Gothamist enjoyed the ritual of the Times actually attempting to find these apartments:
The toughest part about finding the apartments was occasionally having to endure the ritual of the scoffing broker, who delighted in spending the first few minutes of an exploratory phone call insisting that there were no one-bedrooms out there in the $1,000 range. One broker said: "$1,100 in Williamsburg? Must be a dump," as he scrolled down his listings. Another broker in the Bronx said "$1,100 in the city? Must be a studio."Well, even brokers need to laugh, too, we guess.
Franz Ferdinand's Fuse
The Onion may have been joking about a Franz Ferdinand member getting injured, but one of them really did! The odds were pretty good it was going to happen...a few Scottish boys, on a scissor lift being hurled towards the sky in New York City...bottle of vintage Scotch in hand. Yeah, that scenario only ends with a first aid kit.

Madison Square Garden May Move Again
With all the discussion about a new, gleaming West Side Stadium for the Jets has definitely sparked a competitive spirit in the Dolans beyond just trying to knock down the Jets' bid: The NY Times says that Madison Square Garden officials have been investigating the possibility of moving to Eighth Avenue and 31st-33rd Streets - right at the soon-to-be Moynihan Station at the Farley Post Office! Madison Square Garden has been long lamented as being a just-okay venue for basketball and hockey, and the Dolans had claimed they would renovate MSG, versus move to a new site as the city had previously suggested (which was the city's way of trying to keep them from opposing a Jets' stadium bid). When you look at Madison Square Garden's history on Wikipedia, the venue has moved a number of times at the whim of its various owners; the NY Times article notes that one developer tried to move it to the West Side railyards 18 years ago - with a structure to be designed by Frank Gehry! - but that was scuttled because it was felt that would be too far. Well, it still is. If MSG moved to the Farley Post Office/ Moynihan Station, Penn Plaza would be turned into even more high-end apartments and offices. But before anything can happen, the city has to approve these plans, which would make for an interesting meeting, the Mayor and the Dolans; if only Woody Johnson could be in the mix.
