A Select bus driver in the Bronx was a little too selective for one area mother, whose son was whisked away before she had a chance to climb aboard. The Daily News reports that Karen Wilson, 31, got quite a scare Tuesday when her 7-year-old son Rowan boarded a Bx12 Select Bus that took off without her. It's unclear exactly how the two were separated, but Wilson tells the News, "I turned around and I realized that my son wasn't standing next to me anymore, and the bus was pulling away. I ran behind the bus, waving at the driver, and he just kept going. He kept on going. I'm out of my mind now. I pull out my headset and dialed 911."

Preservationists Plan Rally To Save Pelham Parkway Trees
In order to save the now 73 trees, including an oak that dates back to the Civil War, Bronx preservationists are planning to rally on Saturday. The city claims the trees need to go in order to repair a stretch of road that is notorious for accidents, but locals say the trees are an integral part of the borough's landscape. George Zulch of Pelham Parkway Preservation Alliance told the Post, They keep saying it's [either] safety or the trees, but we say it can be safety and the trees."
City To Cut Down 87 Trees for Pelham Parkway Project
Bronx residents are up in arms over a $36 million road improvement project that would require 87 mature trees to be cut down. Officials say the trees roots extend underneath a portion of road that needs to be repaved, and pose a safety hazard. But Baychester resident Joan Ribosh told WCBS, "I feel bad. They’ve been here so long. I lived here in the 50s and 60s, and all the trees are still here.” Thankfully, Regis Philbin is on the scene.
Are Goats Wandering By Hutch Escaping From Santeria Sacrifices?
When we reported Tuesday that a fourth sick, emaciated goat had been found wandering in the area of Pelham Bay Park near the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx, one commenter provided a possible explanation for the mystery: "These goats aren't 'escaping' from anywhere. they're the victims of Santeria sacrifice that regularly takes place in Pelham Bay Park." Indeed, locals have long reported seeing candles, fruits and animal bones and skulls in the area.
Another Lost Goat, Ears Mutilated, Found Wandering Near Hutch
Yet another wandering goat has been found in Pelham Bay Park, near the junction of I-95 South and the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx. The white male goat, seen here, is estimated to be approximately two years old and suffering from what appears to be an advanced upper respiratory infection. His ears are also mutilated, according to Farm Sanctuary, which has agreed to receive the goat at their upstate farm.
Clinton Officially Wins NYC Over Obama by 114,043 Votes
After the many questions about the unofficial Democratic primary results, the NYC Board of Elections has released the official results for the February 5 primary results, confirming a Clinton victory in the Big Apple. She won 55% of the vote with 527,941 votes, to Barack Obama's 43% (413,898 votes). A total of 955,966 votes were cast, meaning 34% of the city's registered Democrats voted.
Subway Delays, Due to Fire, Switching Problems
A four-alarm fire that destroyed at least 12 businesses in the Bronx has also caused some transit issues. Smoke at the Pelham Parkway 2 station is causing the 2 to bypass all stations between Wakefield-241st and East 180th, bypassing Gun Hill Road, Burke Avenue, Allerton Avenue, Pelham Parkway and Bronx Park East. The MTA says there are shuttle buses between stations and also suggests riders take other buses for the B, D, 4 and 6 trains.
Extra, Extra
- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a pedestrian struck on Autumn and Liberty Aves. in Brooklyn, a suspicious fire on Wallace Ave. and Pelham Parkway in the Bronx, and a carjacking on 85th St. in the Bronx.
- Lawyers for Ted Corliss continue to argue for charges to be dismissed against their client, who attempted to jump off the Empire State Building, even after the State Supreme Court ruled that jumping off tall buildings was a form of free speech. Corliss is currently experimenting with jumping out of airplanes and landing without a parachute.
- I'm still trying to figure out how to parlay my cardboard box residence to this Internet entrepreneur's comfortable domicile. Next week in Extra, Extra: drunk guys hurting themselves and barely legal girls making out.
- PSA: 7 Line service will be out of commission starting this upcoming Saturday. Alternate service will be available on the LIRR, unless of course, Amtrak workers go on strike, in which case one can take the subwa . . .nevermind.
Today's Subway Headaches
Earlier this afternoon, an A/C power outage along the 7 line caused service to stop in both directions. Apparently one of the signals went out at 1:35PM, and the MTA wasn't completely sure when it would be fixed. Other parts of the 7 came back and now, thankfully, 7 service is back and running in time for the rush hour.
Anna Nicole Judge Hails From the Bronx
As the fight over Anna Nicole Smith's body continues in a Florida courtroom, the judge presiding over the proceedings has become something of a media star. And Judge Larry Seidlin is ready, telling people that he's ready for a TV show. We chalk up his chutzpah to a Bronx background.
Tell the MTA What You Think About Buses!
-Hylan Boulevard Looking at the MTA's site, it's pretty cool that the MTA is taking other bus systems around the world into consideration - and we love any plan that wants better bus boarding!
Map of the Day: NYC Bike Maps!
We're always looking for current bike path maps. The most authoratative comes from Transportation Alternatives, but it's a 1.5MB PDF, and hasn't been updated this year. The NYC Bike Map 2006 mashup pictured above is attempting to fill in the gaps, but seems to be missing a bunch of the smaller paths. We've already featured the Secret Bike Maps page-- but still haven't taken that trip to City Island. Has anyone successfully biked up there from Manhattan? We've circled the route on the map above, but we're not sure how long it would take to get there and back, and none of our pansy-ass friends will do it without some more information.
