You guys, did you know that you can sleep in the City's parks and not get arrested or mugged or mangled or anything!? Really! Every year, as part of the Parks & Recreation Department's Urban Park Rangers program, families are offered the chance to camp out under stars in eight parks, including Fort Greene, Marine, Pelham Bay, and the big daddy of them all, Central. But, in true New York fashion, it won't be easy.
Camp Out In Central Park Without Getting Arrested
Coyotes: They Are Basically One Of Us Now
The 30-pound female coyote that was captured Thursday after leading authorities on a chase through lower Manhattan, has been released! The Parks Department kept mum on her new location when talking to the NY Post and NY Times, noting it didn't want Wally (that's what they named her) to be harassed once back in her natural habitat, but this morning spokeswoman Vickie Karp told us: "Our coyote has been released into Pelham Bay Park, the city's largest park, and one which already has coyotes in residence. Off she went — healthy, beautiful, and happy." Leave Wally alone, everyone.
Dragon Wagon Goes Off The Rails, 11 Injured At Bronx Carnival
A church carnival in the Bronx turned into a house of horror when a roller coaster overturned and injured eleven people. Witnesses at the thirteenth annual St. Theresa Festival in Pelham Bay Park say that something was not right with the "Dragon Wagon" all day long, with reports that there was a clicking sound coming from the kiddie ride that stood no more than four feet off the ground. At around 9:30 p.m., the ride finally gave and ran off the tracks. Seven children were taken to Jacobi Hospital and one of the two adults injured was a pregnant woman, but all of the injuries were not considered serious, described as bumps and scratches. One elderly woman told the News, "I thought it was dangerous from the beginning," and when the ride finally did tilt over, the woman said that she thought "someone was shot." Police shut down the carnival for the night after the accident and continue to investigate what caused the malfunction.
Sloppy Snow Soon to Go
We'd like to thank all the nice businesses and apartment buildings on W. 116th St. that so thoughtfully cleared their sidewalks of slush this morning. It will be easy to thank them because there was only one place that actually shoveled their sidewalk. Come on people, you're a business with 400 square feet of sidewalk, how hard can it be to keep it clean? Snowfall totals across the city ranged from 1.9 inches at the airports to 3.1 inches in Pelham Bay Park. All that snow will be naturally removed by the end of the day today by rain and warmer weather.
