Double-Decker Bus Pins Woman in Midtown

A New York bus tour turned grisly yesterday morning as a Gray Line double-decker bus struck a woman outside of the United Nations. Lolaa Alrashied was crossing 42nd St and was struck by the bus and pinned underneath. She is currently listed in serious condition, with leg fractures and trauma, at Bellevue Hospital.

Witness Speeds To Nab Suspected Hit-And-Run Driver

WCBS 2 spoke to a tow truck driver who decided to chase down a Nissan Maxima driver who apparently hit a pedestrian and left the scene. Peter Dinome said, "The pedestrian was crossing the street. He had the right of way. As I started to chase [the Nissan's driver] he took me down Gun Hill Road. After I got down Gun Hill Road, I swung a u-turn. He took me back onto 95-South, down Pelham Parkway West, through the grass at 80mph. I'm doing 100 down the one way blocks. After that I lost him on Crosby Avenue, I'm coming back to where it happened, and there he comes running a red light. I stopped him there and I dragged him out of the car." Dinome added the driver said, "'I'm sorry,' he started crying and he wouldn't stop crying. I told him, 'did you realize what you just did?' And he goes, 'yeah, I'm sorry.'" The pedestrian, whose name hasn't been released, is in serious condition. The police say witnesses should call the cops and not take matters into their own hands.

Pedestrian Struck By Car In The Bronx

A Bronx father of three was struck by a car last night in Hunts Point around 11:15 p.m. and is now in critical condition. According to 1010WINS, "Octavio Reyes, 58...was hit after he parked his car and then attempted to cross Bruckner Blvd. on his way home... The vehicle -- described as a black Lincoln Town Car -- was traveling southbound on Bruckner Blvd. when the crash occurred." The car apparently has heavy windshield damage. Police are investigating the hit-and-run and urge anyone with information to contact them.

Pedestrian Struck By Out Of Control Van In Queens

Last night, a woman was injured when an out-of-control van came "skidding" off the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park exit in Queens. According to the Daily News, "the woman, who had come from Virginia to attend a high school reunion, was talking on a cell phone when the van smashed into the parked Toyota she was standing next to, police sources said." A witness told WABC 7, "The white van was on the expressway changing lane to lane and going very fast. For some reason it then turned towards the park, came on the grass, crashed into a blue car then hit one of the girls. She went flying up into the air and then the van just kept going and spinning around, eventually around the tree." The victim, Paula Jimenez, is reportedly in critical condition. The Post reports the driver, Jian Seng He, 49, was "charged with assault, reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of an accident"—he also may have been fleeing from another accident at the time.

Man Struck By Unmarked Police Car In Queens

Last night, a man crossing Queens Boulevard at 44th Street was hit by an unmarked police car. The Daily News reports witnesses say the pedestrian Evelio Villa, 47, and his girlfriend had the right of way and the car went through a red light—"This guy was flying. He went like a bat out of hell. There was no screeching brakes, no tire marks, nothing." However, a police union source tells the paper that the car from the 109th Precinct had the green light and that Villa was intoxicated (another police source says the car turned on its sirens when it saw Villa). Villa's girlfriend says the car was going slow but actually accelerated as it approached, "I tried to grab him, but by that time he was in the air." Villa is in stable condition at Elmhurst Hospital with a fractured shoulder and the police officer driving the car has not been charged.

Hamilton Heights Hit-And-Run Victim "Never Saw" Driver

Yesterday morning, a woman was struck by a SUV as she was crossing Amsterdam Avenue near West 145th Street. The victim, identified as Debbie Evans, was initially reported as dead—the Daily News reported, "The impact - which knocked Evans out of her shoes - instantly killed the mother of two, police said." However, WABC 7 says the 48-year-old woman is in a coma (the NYPD just told us, per their latest update from yesterday, that Evans was in critical condition; they are still waiting for today's update). At any rate, police are searching for the driver of a gray or silver SUV. One witness told the News, "I saw an SUV hit her, a little old lady walking across the street... The car was going faster than it should be; she never saw him. It's a travesty." Related: We're hearing some reports that a pedestrian was struck at Amsterdam near West 143rd around 7:30 a.m. this morning.

Woman Struck In Hamilton Heights Hit-And-Run

[Update: Some reports indicate that the victim is in critical condition after the crash.] Early this morning around 3:15 a.m., a woman was struck by a vehicle on Amsterdam Avenue near West 145th Street. WABC 7 reports, "According to one witness, the victim never had a chance to get out of the way of a car that was moving rapidly on Amsterdam Ave. The impact was so powerful, it sent the woman flying 10 to 15 feet in the air." The vehicle didn't stop and the police are looking for the driver. Witnesses say the vehicle was a silver or gray SUV; one of its side mirrors fell off and was recovered by the scene. The victim, who was in her 50s, had apparently been at a nearby restaurant with a friend before the incident occurred.

Cab Jumps Curb, Hits Four Pedestrians, No Charges Filed

A tipster sent us this photo of the aftermath of an accident yesterday on the Upper West Side, in which a cab jumped the curb on West 86th Street and struck four pedestrians. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured; paramedics took two men and a street vendor to St. Luke's with minor injuries, and a fourth pedestrian refused medical attention. Cabbie Hafiz Faheem tells the Daily News that a beer truck clipped him as he turned off Amsterdam Avenue: "He came behind me so fast, and he hit me. He was not paying attention or he was doing something." It's not yet clear what brand of beer was involved, or if any of the precious cargo was damaged in the incident.

Brooklyn Man Killed By Mini School Bus

A 25-year-old photographer was killed by a mini-school bus in Borough Park earlier today. 1010WINS reports, "[Police] say he was attempting to cross the street in Brooklyn just before 10 a.m. Tuesday. He was about 100 feet from the crosswalk when he was struck." The Daily News, which identifies the man as Matthew Smolovich, reports that he was taking pictures on 44th Street near 14th Avenue with a "Canon 5D with a 16X35 lens" and "was looking down when he crossed the street near 14th Ave.," according to sources. The bus driver stayed at the scene and was not issued a summons; none of the children aboard the bus were injured.

SUV Strikes Apparently Jaywalking Pedestrian On 14th St.

Yesterday afternoon, a pedestrian crossing 14th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues was struck by an SUV. The Daily News reports that witnesses said the pedestrian, who was taken to St. Vincent's with "massive head injuries," was jaywalking. However, the SUV—a Range Rover—may have been traveling at a very fast speed. One witness told the News, "[The driver] was turning the corner. He had to be doing 60. He swerved to avoid the pedestrian, who was running for his life. He didn't make it. He just flew and was bleeding from the head."

Staten Island Teen Driver Charged in Pedestrian's Death

A 19-year-old driver who only recently got his driver's license was charged with criminally negligent homicide after fatally crashing into a 47-year-old man who had been waiting at a bus stop on Staten Island. The Staten Island Advance reports that Joseph Catrama "allegedly sped his white 2008 Hyundai through a red light at Capodanno Boulevard and Seaview Avenue, causing his car to jump the curb and strike...Nathan Pakow."

Pedestrian, Waiting for Bus, Fatally Struck by Car

Around 10:40 a.m., a man was struck by a white Honda that apparently jumped a curb at Capodanno Boulevard and Seaview Avenue on Staten Island. The Staten Island Advance reported the man, who had been waiting, was pronounced dead at the Staten Island University Hospital 25 minutes later, and described the incident: "The 19-year-old driver's car apparently jumped the curb after making a turn onto Capodanno from Seaview, pinning the man between the vehicle and a pole that lists the bus schedule." The driver stayed at the scene and was questioned by police—but was not taken into custody.

Car, Fleeing Cops, Hits Three Pedestrians in the Bronx

Three teenagers were struck by a speeding car in the Van Nest section of the Bronx. The teens, ages 15, 16, and 17, are hospitalized and police are searching for the car's occupants, who fled on foot.

Police Identify Man Dragged 20 Miles From Queens to Brooklyn

The police are investigating the horrifying death of a man who was struck by a SUV in Queens and then dragged by another van for 20 miles into Brooklyn. The NYPD, who found a broken iPhone and a Western Union receipt in the man's pockets, have just identified the victim, whose body was extremely damaged: According to CityRoom, the victim was Guido Salvador Carabajo-Jarra, who had just turned 26 on Tuesday.

Van Unknowingly Drags Man's Body 17 Miles On 3 Highways

After being struck by one car, a man was dragged by a second vehicle through 17 miles of highway from Queens into Brooklyn early this morning. Police have not been able to identify the man who was originally struck by the SUV at 6 a.m. in Corona, not far from Shea Stadium and would not be discovered until the van's driver arrived in Coney Island an hour later. Along the way, the body was dragged from the Grand Central Parkway to the Van Wyck Expressway and then onto the Belt Parkway before other motorists flagged the driver down.

Pedestrian + Van + Canal Street = You Guessed It

Reader Phil sent us this photograph of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle (believed to be the van) this morning around 10 a.m. at Canal and Centre Street. And there was a traffic agent on the scene when it happened! Phil tells us the pedestrian seemed okay (though he/she was rubbing his/her head).

Alleged DWI Cop's Mother Blames Pedestrians

After Jersey City cop Martin Abreu was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, after allegedly striking two pedestrians—killing one and injuring the other—his mother defended him. The Daily News reports that a woman who identified herself as Abreu's mother said, "It was her fault," referring to 26-year-old Marilyn Feng, who died while crossing West Street at Albany in Battery Park City. The woman added, "So my son went out and had a couple of drinks. He deserves to have a good time now and then."

Mother, Two Children Struck by Hit-and-Run Driver

Police are looking for the driver of a white SUV that struck a woman and two children they crossed the intersection at Avenue H and Utica Avenue in East Flatbush. According to WABC 7, "The pedestrians were crossing a street" when the SUV hit them and took off. "The three were then struck by a second vehicle." The driver of the second vehicle stayed at the scene and was charged with driving with a suspended license. The woman and 11-year-old boy are in stable condition while the 8-year-old is in critical condition.

Driver in Fatal Hit-and-Run Was Drunk, Drugged Out

Some more details about Kenneth Guyear, the man charged with fatally striking two pedestrians with a stolen car on Sunday. Guyear said in his videotape confession, "I had five or six drinks and took two Xanax pills. I stole the car that was parked on the street. I drove the car and saw the pedestrian but I didn't think I hit anybody. I kept driving and then stopped the car and looked for blood on the car. I kept driving and the police stopped me." The Daily News reports that he allegedly said to a black police officer, "I will have your job,. For a black cop, you just follow what the white guy tells you to do." Guyear, who was held without bail, has a previous arrest for, per the Post, "unauthorized use of a car while drunk." Brendan Ogle, whose 16-year-old son was killed, said, "I hope there's enough public outcry to put this guy and guys like him behind bars."

Arrest in Bed-Stuy Hit-and-Run

The police arrested a teenager in connection with the Friday hit-and-run, where a black Mercedes jumped a curb and crashed into a tree, alsohitting two brothers walking on the sidewalk. WCBS 2 reports that Samuel Branch, 18, was charged with "unlicensed driving and leaving the scene of an accident." Branch allegedly denied the charges, telling reporters while led from the precinct, "I was trying to help those kids," referring to 16-year-old Dwayne Jackson and 4-year-old Dillon Jackson. The Daily News says that the pre-K student was given a blood transfusion and "had pins inserted in his leg and will need six to eight weeks to recover." And the Post spoke to Dwayne, who suffered a broken arm when trying to protect Dillon from the car; the big brother said his pain was "nothing compared to my brother being alive."

We're hearing reports that a pedestrian at Bowery, near Grand, in Chinatown was fatally hit by an 18-wheeler. The 18-wheeler may have tried to flee the scene, as the truck went over the Manhattan Bridge. The truck was stopped on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and the investigation is ongoing. A few months ago, a few blocks away on Canal, a speeding truck hit a bus, which then fatally hit a pedestrian on a sidewalk. And earlier today, an elderly woman was fatally hit by a car at 75th St and 14th Ave in Brooklyn; the car fled the scene.

2008_07_hrflat.jpgPolie say an 11-year-old boy was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver early this morning in Brooklyn. According to the AP, the incident occurred on East 42nd Street in Flatbush and police "determined that the boy, Rondell Grant Jr., had been hit by one of three cars that fled the scene." The boy was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital; police are continuing their investigation. Update: The police reportedly arrested a 19-year-old with leaving the scene of an accident.

A man who was allegedly drunk crashed on Hylan Boulevard between Bryant and Bancroft Avenues during rush hour. With his kids in the minivan, the Staten Island Advance reports the driver "lost control" and "hit...a Verizon FIOS employees...sending his shoes and clipboard sailing through the air." Then the van "veered into the opposite lanes and hit a blue 2005 Mazda sedan head-on, which slammed into a black 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo sport utility vehicle." And the minivan also hit a light pole. Between six and eight passengers from the minivan and Mazda were taken to the hospital, while the Verizon employee is in serious condition.

     

Last month, there were a string of accidents that left over twenty people injured and one person dead after vehicles jumped the curb and hit pedestrians, seemingly making sidewalk the most dangerous place for pedestrians. Yesterday, an accident at Broadway and West 63rd Street, a taxi cab and car crashed into each other, sending one vehicle spinning into a Starbucks and hitting a pedestrian.

A Queens car wash was the scene of a fatal incident that left one employee dead. Two workers who had been drying a vehicle were hit by another worker who drove into them with an SUV.

A 92-year-old woman was run over and dragged by a Chinatown bus yesterday afternoon. Her injuries were so bad that her legs were amputated at Bellevue.
