Late last night just before 11:44 p.m., a pedestrian was struck by a MTA bus on East 23 Street, between Broadway and Madison Avenue. Police say that the victim, 21-year-old Amos Velez, was unresponsive and unconscious; when EMS arrived, they pronounced him dead. Now the Post reports that Velez was a busboy at Eataly, located at Fifth and 23rd street.
Man Struck By Car On FDR Drive Dies From Injuries
On Wednesday around 11:30 p.m., a taxi cab passenger, apparently frustrated that the cab was stuck in traffic on the FDR, jumped out and was struck by a minivan. Now, the Daily News reports that the victim, Lower East Side boutique owner Mehdi Kabbaj, died from his injuries.

A pedestrian walking by West 57th Street and 10th Avenue was killed by a motorcyclist that struck him. According to WCBS 2, "Police say a 22-year-old woman driving the motorcycle hit the man while he crossed the street at 57th and 10th Avenue just before 3 a.m."

Yesterday afternoon, a driver with a suspended license was backing up on Amsterdam Avenue to get a parking space and struck two women crossing the street at West 98th Street. Yolanda Casal, 78, was pronounced dead at the hospital while the other woman, her 41-year-old daughter Anais Emanuel, was in stable condition. A witness told the Post, "They had the right of way and that guy just kept backing up. He was trying to get that spot."
Another Crash Where 89-Year-Old Pedestrian Was Killed In Harlem
Just a day after an 89-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck by a pick-up truck that jumped a curb (after a livery cab hit it), a motorcyclist was struck by a van at 146th Street and Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard in Harlem around 1:20 p.m. According to DNAinfo, "Witnesses said the motorcyclist was headed south on Adam Clayton Powell when it collided with a van crossing on W. 146th Street, witnesses said. It was unclear which vehicle might have ran the light."
No Charges In Harlem Crash That Killed One Pedestrian, Injured Others
The driver of the truck that spun up onto a Harlem sidewalk into a crowd of pedestrians yesterday has not been charged, and investigators say no criminality is suspected. There are differing accounts of what caused the accident, which killed 89-year-old Leonia White, who was being pushed in her wheelchair near the corner of 145th Street and Seventh Avenue. The collision occurred in the middle of the intersection as a livery cab driver in a Lincoln Town Car attempted to make a left turn onto 145th Street and hit an oncoming pickup truck.
Fatal DWI Bus Driver Reportedly Had 1.75 Liter Jug Of Vodka
The tour bus driver charged with DWI after fatally hitting and dragging a pedestrian for blocks in Hell's Kitchen reportedly had a 1.75 liter jug of vodka on the bus with him. And the Post adds that he had a "silver travel mug nearly-emptied of vodka" and the Daily News says that Steve Drappel, 57, a Florida resident, initially blew a 0.14 on a breath test.
Bronx Man Killed By City Bus Making Turn
A 76-year-old man crossing a Bronx street was fatally struck by a NYC Transit bus making a turn at 6:55 p.m. last night. Edmundo Cortes, a father of 10 and grandfather of 20, was headed to the grocery store when crossed Castle Hill Avenue in the Parkchester section. The bus driver apparently didn't realize he hit anyone as he was making a right turn, because he continued driving until a witness ran after him and stopped him. Cortes' body was crushed under the wheels, and another witness told the Daily News, "It was a gruesome sight."
Driver Goes On Trial For Fatally Striking Pregnant Woman
Last year, a pregnant mother of three walking on East 37th Street was killed when a Gristede's van driver jumped a curb and barreled into her. Another woman was injured and the driver, Keston Brown, was found with a 0.11 blood alcohol level. Yesterday, Brown went on trial for Ramos' death, and a prosecutor accused him of hitting the gas instead of the brakes when the van—"essentially a moving weapon"—hit the curb.
Crossing The Harlem River Drive Isn't A Good Idea
A man who was crossing the Harlem River Drive at East 135th Street was killed when "he was clipped by the sideview mirror of a Chevy Suburban and pushed under the rear wheels of a passing school bus," the Daily News reports. The victim's friend said, "I've never seen nobody get hit like that. He literally flew," and added, "We told him, 'Don't cross the highway, that's dangerous.' Instead of walking on the ramp, he went on the highway. The car hit him like he was paper." It's unlikely charges will be filed against the SUV driver or the bus driver.
SI Woman Killed By Out-Of-Control Livery Car
Around 7 a.m., a Staten Island woman standing a block away from her home was fatally struck by an out-of-control livery car. The Staten Island Advance reports, "Sylvie Cameron, 48, was standing at the intersection of Vanderbilt and Tompkins avenues... when the 66-year-old driver of a Clifton Car Service 2001 Crown Victoria hit her." Cameron had been walking to the bus stop to head to work.
Apology From Cab Driver In Fatal Bus Shelter Crash
The livery cab driver who crashed into a Bronx bus shelter last week, killing one man and injuring six others (including a woman whose foot was amputated), has issued an apology. Pedro Marte apparently swerved into the shelter because he was trying to avoid a minivan making an illegal U-turn on the street. The NY State Federation of Taxi Drivers' Fernando Mateo said, "He wants the families to know that it wasn’t his fault. He did everything he could to avoid this terrible tragedy. But he totally lost control and it was out of his hands.” The minivan driver was given a summons.
Family Of Man Killed In Bus Shelter Crash Wants Justice
Days after the 76-year-old was fatally struck by a livery cab that crashed into a bus shelter in the Bronx, Marcelino Adraneda's family is preparing for his funeral. Adraneda was pinned by the cab and his leg was apparently severed; his granddaughter told the Daily News, "I don't want to think about the pain he was in. Only the good times and his smile." But one thing the family cannot believe is that the minivan driver whose illegal U-turn allegedly caused the livery cab to swerve into the shelter only got a summons. Adraneda's daughter spoke to the Post, "We would like to see some charges against the driver," and a grandson said the driver didn't even apologize. Six other people were injured, including a woman whose foot was cut off.

The livery cab apparently swerved to avoid the van, lost control and then plowed into the bus stop shattering the glass shelter. Witnesses say there were four people at the bus shelter and two others were hurt by a bench that went flying after the crash."

Around 9:40 a.m. this morning, a 7-year-old child and his mother were struck by a MTA tow truck at Second Avenue and East 125th Street. The boy was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital. According to the Post, "The boy and his mother appeared to be jaywalking at the time of the accident" and the pair were trying to "coss an entrance ramp to the Triboro Bridge."

Yesterday morning, a crash between two SUVs led to a 59-year-old pedestrian's death on Staten Island. According to the Staten Island Advance, after a Chevy Tahoe and Subaru Forester collided, the impact sent the Tahoe onto the curb at Slosson Avenue at Windsor Road, and into Beata Kurpiewski and 3-year-old Philip Kurpiewski.
Man Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver, Dragged By 2nd Car
Early on Sunday morning, a homeless man crossing Brighton Beach Avenue near Brighton Fourth Street was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver and then dragged by a livery cab. According to the Post, "an eastbound, black Ford Explorer barreled into" 60-year-old Morris Freidman "and then took off... Moments later, a Lincoln Town Car struck Freidman and dragged him a short distance before the driver realized something was wrong... The Lincoln driver got out, saw the victim and called police." The livery cab driver, who stayed at the scene, took a breath test and was not charged. The Daily News reports Freidman was once a car service driver before becoming homeless. The police are looking for the Explorer.
Man Hit And Killed By Two Cars On Grand Central Parkway
A 32-year-old man died on Saturday when he was struck by two cars on the Grand Central Parkway near the Jewel Avenue exit in Flushing, according to the Daily News. The victim — whose name has not yet been released — was struck at around 4:40 am by a 2002 Buick. "I was driving along...then all of a sudden I had a bump on the car," one of the drivers told the tabloid. "And I thought, 'Oh, my God! That looked looked like a body.'" Moments later, the victim was run over by a 2002 Dodge. "I thought it was a mannequin," said the driver of the Dodge. "[He] was already...on the ground when I hit him. What could I do?" Both of the drivers remained at the scene and were not charged.
Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Truck On Midtown Sidewalk
Terrible—WABC 7 reports that a pedestrian on a sidewalk at Park Avenue and East 50th Street was killed when a box truck jumped a curb. "A box truck that apparently made an illegal left from Park Avenue to East 50th Street collided with a pickup truck, which was northbound on Park Avenue. The force of the collision pushed the box truck onto the sidewalk, mowing down the victim. Neither driver was injured. Both were tested and came up negative for alcohol consumption. However, the box truck driver will likely be charged with driving with a suspended license."
Neighborhood Mourns Death Of Bay Ridge Dentist
On Thursday night, a dentist was killed in a hit-and-run while crossing 4th Avenue near 79th Street in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn. Harry Lewner, 58, lived in Cedarhurst, Long Island an had a practice in Brooklyn since 1978. Office manager JoAnna Leask told the Daily News, "We walked out of the office together, and right after I said goodbye and turned the corner, I heard this loud boom. I ran over ... and saw him just lying in the street." Karissa McFaline, 21, who allegedly struck Lewner with her Kia and fled northbound, turned herself into police for leaving the scene of an accident. A second driver who hit Lewner while traveling southbound stayed at the scene and was not charged. Newsday (subscription req'd) reports that a dentist friend of Lewner's will see his patients today; Leask said, "That's what Harry would have wanted."
Woman Charged In Fatal Brooklyn Hit-And-Run
A 21-year-old woman was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after allegedly striking a man and driving off. According to NY1, "Police say 58-year-old Harry Lewner of Cedarhurst was crossing 4th Avenue near 79th Street in Bay Ridge around 9:15 last night when he was hit by [Karisa McFaline]'s car and then hit by another car." The second driver stayed at the scene, where Lewner was pronounced dead. McFaline "turned herself in at the 7th Precinct on Manhattan's Lower East Side about an hour and a half after the accident."
Brooklyn Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Ambulance
A woman in Brooklyn was killed by an ambulance early this morning. NY1 reports, "Sources say an emergency medical services vehicle struck a 80-year-old woman as she was standing in a crosswalk on Bay Parkway by the Belt Parkway just after 6 a.m. The ambulance was transporting a 100-year-old woman with stomach pains to Lutheran Hospital." The investigation is ongoing.

A 75-year-old man was fatally struck by a SUV in Sunset Park around 11:20 p.m. last night. A cabbie told the Daily News that Hugo Janssen was "crossing against the light" when he was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban at 45th Street and 4th Avenue. The same cabbie told the Post, "The SUV in front of me hit something. When I got closer, I saw it was a person lying flat on his face... I'm upset I didn't get the license."
Accused Of Killing Two Pedestrians, S.I. Driver Out On Bail
Allmir Lekperic, the 26-year-old Staten Island driver charged with fatally striking an elderly couple walking to a Thanksgiving Eve church mass and leaving the scene, posted the $50,000 bail. And his sister was also arraigned, for her part in trying to help him cover up his crime.

On Wednesday afternoon, DOT officials had met with the pastor at Our Lady Queen of Peace church on Staten Island to discuss the problem of reckless drivers on the street that runs by the church and its school. Rev. Pancrose Kalist warned city officials about the dangerous situation on New Dorp Lane, where crossing guards routinely witness drivers blasting by them and running the red light. Six hours after his meeting, an elderly married couple was killed by a hit-and-run driver with numerous traffic violations who sped through a red light.

Last night, a couple in their 70s were fatally struck by a vehicle as they were crossing a Staten Island street to attend a church mass. The Staten Island Advance reports, "Lillian Sabados [77] was pronounced dead at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, at 4 this morning. Her husband, Peter S. Sabados, 78, was pronounced dead shortly after the 7:15 p.m. accident in front of our Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church."
Truck Driver Who Fatally Struck 2 Tourists Sentenced
Last year, a private sanitation truck driver had an epileptic seizure and fatally struck a British couple in Midtown and, yesterday, he was sentenced to 20 years to life. The Daily News reports that State Supreme Court Justice Richard Carruthers pointed out that Auvryn Scarlett "stopped taking his epilepsy medicine because it interfered with his boozing" and said the 54-year-old was a "time bomb." Scarlett, who had been found guilty of the murder, also never told his employer he had seizures; he said, "I'm very sorry for what took place." The children of one of the victims had written to the court, "There are lots of things that we will never get to share with our mum. She will never witness her only daughter one day walk down the aisle."
