The amount of salmonella tainted peanuts sold to manufacturers by Peanut Corp. of America—in turn affecting a huge range of products from Little Debbie snack cakes to special peanut butter for diabetics—may take up to two years to purge from food supply chains. Warning of the dangers of long-term storage, the FDA’s Dr. Stephen Sundlof told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution “this is not over yet.” There have been 30 reported cases of the outbreak strain of Salmonella Typhimurium in New York since September. In an effort to restore confidence, the National Peanut Board will build a giant peanut field inside Grand Central Terminal next Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; get your picture taken with a peanut farmer, go nuts for nuts, free samples galore, and so on. Salmonella Incidents Affecting NYC Dessert Menus

With more than 575 people sick in 43 states, public fears over salmonella-tainted peanuts are affecting restaurant menu offerings in the city. The Times reports that peanut-based desserts made by Gramercy Tavern’s Nancy Olson and Dovetail’s Vera Tong have been removed at least temporarily from dessert menus, and more customers want to know the origin of peanut products served by restaurants. The salmonella crisis allegedly stems from tainted peanuts sold by Peanut Corp. of America, a Virginia-based company, to an assortment of manufacturers and food producers like Clif Bar and Little Debbie. more ›
