Blame The Anorexic Clientele: Hipster "Hotspot" Kenmare Calls It Quits

Less than two years after it opened Zagat Buzz is reporting that Paul Sevigny and Nur Khan's briefly inescapable hotspot Kenmare has closed. In its place a new concept will launch in the coming months. But where will the skinny models go and not eat now? more ›

Is Don Hill's Saved Or Doomed To Become The Next CBGBs?

Is Don Hill's Saved Or Doomed To Become The Next CBGBs?

Is this rollercoaster ride going to end the same way CBGBs did? At the end of March nightlife mainstay Don Hill died, leaving behind his club, Don Hill's, on Spring and Greenwich streets. Though Paul Sevigny and Nur Khan fully took over operations, the real estate vultures seemed to be circling the one-story building sitting on a prime plot of land in Manhattan. By the end of April it was announced that Don Hill's would close, and a developer would take over the SoHo spot. But now according to the Villager, Don Hill's isn't going anywhere... yet! more ›

Kenmare, Obnoxious Not-Open Club, Already in SLA Trouble

Kenmare, Obnoxious Not-Open Club, Already in SLA Trouble

To the untrained eye, this photo depicts a packed restaurant in full swing at the height of dinner service. But what you're really looking at here is just a few friends getting together for a quiet dinner at Kenmare, the new restaurant/nightclub from the infamously exclusive Beatrice Inn crowd. It's only been "soft" open for a couple weeks now, and already neighborhood opposition—which also brought down the Beatrice Inn—is mounting. It seems there were a bunch of raucous parties during fashion week, and now the SLA is poised to bring the hammer down on the place. more ›

Paul Sevigny Takes On "Corporate" Nightlife

Paul Sevigny Takes On "Corporate" Nightlife

Some people like to go to over-priced and over-hyped clubs at night where they are made to feel really exclusive and important, and right now there's some sort of power struggle going on over who owns these people. Not, like, owns. But you know... who's the sheep herder, or, as they call it, "the king of nightlife"? more ›

Is Beatrice Inn Going D-List During Recession?

Is Beatrice Inn Going D-List During Recession?

Quelle horror! This recession thing is really real now, people. The Observer is reporting that the Beatrice Inn has been forced to let in out-of-town no-names because they allegedly need their dirty hard-earned bridge and tunnel money...or do they? The West Village bar is famously run by Chloë Sevigny's brother Paul, and on top of a strict door policy it boasts a hefty regulars list of the young, beautiful and bold-faced. But now the patrons have noticed they're letting just about anyone in these days.

“It’s just a totally different crowd now,” said a 22-year-old model, who until recently was a regular at the bar. “I’ve seen the doorman let in Jersey trash—girls dressed in like H&M and Forever 21—sleazy guys looking to pick up underage girls, Gossip Girl wannabes, and like C-list celebrities,” the model continued. “It’s just not the same. People stagger up and ask for autographs and they take photos with cell phone cameras. Before, anyone who would be doing that would never be allowed in. It’s going the way of other clubs like Bungalow 8.”
One regular had a more upbeat outlook, however, saying that the usual crowd is simply too cold to leave their lofty lairs at the moment (or maybe they're in Atlantic City?). Meanwhile, Mr. Sevigny assured the paper, "If anything, the Beatrice’s door policy has gotten tighter, not looser. We don’t make a ton of money, but we do pride ourselves on having one of the toughest door policies in New York City. I guarantee you we will be the last to sell out.” Sorry, Jersey (or anyone not approximately this cool), take your pedestrian names and synthetic poly-blends back from whence they came! more ›

Atlantic City: the Hamptons for Hipsters?

Last month, word on the Boardwalk was that two former Atlantic City hotels (the Howard Johnson and Holiday Inn) would morph into a boutique hotel named the Chelsea (no relation). Further bringing a Manhattan feel to the has-been Jersey destination is the oft-celeb-drenched scene of Manhattan's Beatrice Inn; the club's operators, Paul Sevigny and Matt Abramcyk amongst them, have been charged with creating "a vibe." The collaboration had AC's Visitors Authority declaring, “The New York hipsters are coming to Atlantic City." more ›
