NY Times Parody Features Death Of NY Times, 2nd Avenue Subway Bike lane

First the NY Times had to publish a correction about misstated references to The Hobbit, and now it's getting pilloried in parody form at The Final Edition, whose lead story is the demise of The Grey Lady ("THE NEW YORK TIMES, WORLD'S NEWSPAPER OF RECORD, CLOSES ITS DOORS FOREVER" and how the Times building is on fire "Owners May Have 'Torched' Building for Insurance Money"). There are also stories about canine date rape, NJ Governor Christie exploding, and even the Second Avenue Subway Bike Lane : more ›

Paul Krugman On Pedestrian-Friendly Times Square

Paul Krugman On Pedestrian-Friendly Times Square

Finally, the Nobel Prize winner in economics has weighed in on the city's Greenlight for Midtown plan. Paul Krugman writes on his NY Times blog, "I’m definitely in favor of making part of Broadway a traffic-free area. But you have to wonder — who’s this for? As far as I know, nobody goes to that part of Manhattan anyway — it’s too crowded." Of course, a few of his commenters noticed the Yogi Berra-homage, with some even demanding he acknowledge the legendary Yankees catcher-philosopher. more ›

Nobel Prize Winner Krugman Likes New Bailout Plan

Nobel Prize Winner Krugman Likes New Bailout Plan

Paul Krugman, who won this year's Nobel Prize for economics, told CNBC that the Treasury Department's move to inject banks with $250 billion is better than the original bailout plan. He said, "In the last six days this thing has come together with a plan that really does address the critical problem of inadequate capital at the banks (and) addresses the need for guarantees to calm the markets down. We don’t know this is going to work, I wish we were sure, but this is a much better. For the first time I’m starting to feel that policy is really getting some traction on the crisis.” more ›

Paul Krugman Wins Nobel Prize in Economics

Paul Krugman, Princeton University professor and NY Times op-ed columnist, was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics today. The Nobel prize committee gave the award for Krugman's "analysis of trade patterns and location of economic activity." In other terms, he's looked at how economics of scale affects free trade and globalization (and urbanization). He told the Times this morning, "It’s been an extremely weird day, but weird in a positive way." more ›

Meet Times Select

Meet Times Select

Well, it's apparently many things, but for Gothamist, it's an opportunity to plunder the NY Times of 100 archive articles each month! For $49.95 a year, the potential to have 100 archived articles for free (they retail for $3.95) is the best money-making scheme we've heard of in a long time. Just think: Get your $395 worth of old articles for free and then sell them on the street! Even if you're selling them for 50 cents each, you're making money! That said, Gothamist welcomes Times Select with open arms because this is clearly a reward for home delivery and suffering with newsprinty hands and annoying inserts (no, Gothamist does not care that the new Richard Meier building has apartment available for more than $5 million!). And also because we've always wanted to see a little orange icon littered across the screen. more ›

Stalk + Blog = Blalk

Stalk + Blog = Blalk

Ben McGrath looks at a beef between Times columnist Paul Krugman and investment consultant/blogger Don Luskin of poorandstupid.com in a New Yorker piece, "Blalking." Luskin met Krugman then blogged, "I have looked evil in the face. Ive been in the same room with it. I dont know how else to describe my feelings now except to say that I feel unclean, and Im having to fight being afraid," leading Krugman to call Luskin "stalker-in-chief." And so on. McGrath details the escalating war between them as well as the blogosphere's introspection about what stalking really is, calling this new web-enabled stalker "blalker." Blalker. Blalker blah blah. Hmm, it makes the point, but it's not as pithy as "psycho blogger." Which Gothamist certainly is to a degree (hello, Jerry Orbach/Will Ferrell/Amy Sedaris/Anthony Bourdain). more ›
